Monsters Inc. Walk refers to a GIF of Sulley and other scarer monsters from the 2001 film Monsters Inc. walking into the main floor of the factory. Online, the GIF achieved popularity as a GIF caption meme format, often getting combined with captions about strong dedication amidst adversity.

Origin

On November 2nd, 2001, animated film Monsters Inc. premiered.^[1] In one scene of the film, a group of scarer monsters led by Sulley walk into the main factory floor (scene shown below).

Prior to February 3rd, 2023, an unknown iFunny user posted a GIF caption meme based on a scene, captioning it with a rape joke (shown below). On February 3rd, iFunny^[2] user Garbage_Meme_Network posted a screenshot of the meme, while on February 5th, 2020, iFunny^[3] user braeburned made the earliest repost of the GIF, gaining over 90 smiles in three years.

Spread

On February 17th, 2020, Twitter^[4] user @uhhDanny posted a meme using the GIF that gained over 820 retweets and 3,400 likes in three years (shown below).

The format did not see significant spread until January 17th, 2021, when Twitter^[5] user @twennyseeks posted a meme about Kerbal Space Program that received over 2,100 retweets and 9,900 likes in two years and saw viral spread online (shown below, left). Through 2021, the GIF caption format achieved significant popularity on iFunny and Reddit; for example, on September 18th, 2021, iFunny^[6] user 2old2meme posted a version that received over 37,600 smiles in two years (shown below, right).

The format maintained popularity online in 2022 and 2023, most notably in the /r/whenthe subreddit.
