About

MSG Sphere, also known as the Madison Square Garden Sphere or Vegas Sphere, is an entertainment building combined with an electronic advertisement billboard in the city of Las Vegas. The largest sphere in the world, the Madison Square Garden Sphere (named after the Madison Square Garden company that created it) became the subject of memes ever since it was activated on July 1st, 2023, typically using various photos as exploitables and photoshopping various imagery on top of the sphere. Before it became open to the public, the outside screens began to show various images that attracted social media attention.

Origin

In 2018, the MSG Sphere at the Venetian Resort started construction on an 18,000-seat auditorium. On July 1st, 2023, the first footage of the screen opening ceremony was then posted to Twitter by the user @Mic_VegasSphere,[1] showing it lighting up and creating circles before saying "Hello World" (shown below).

Spread

Following its unveiling in early July 2023, memes about the sphere almost immediately started to be created, with people swapping out what the visuals were on the sphere with other images. For example, on July 6th, 2023, Twitter user @Mark Kretschmann[2] tweeted an image of the Sphere having a Blue Screen Crash, pretending to be a news source claiming that the sphere had crashed and receiving over 23,500 likes and 6,100 retweets in four days (shown below).

On July 7th, 2023, iFunny user Snott[3] uploaded a meme stating that the Las Vegas sphere had been hacked by someone, editing it to show a cropped image of Barry Wood and earning over 2,200 likes in two days (shown below).
