About
The Joke Is Porn or The Punchline Is Porn refers to a series of image macros and videos used as reaction images that mock memes that reference pornography or incorporate cropped porn, such as Italian Tifa and NSFW Bowling Animations. The format was spawned by a That's It? That Was the Lost Episode meme and achieved viral status after Ankha Zone memes trended in September 2021.
Origin
On June 9th, 2020, iFunny[1] user SaintSentry posted a That's It? That's Was the Lost Episode? meme recaptioned, "That's it? That was the meme? That was just softcore porn!" (shown below). The post gained over 5,300 smiles in two years and has been used by users to react to memes that utilized imagery bordering on pornography rather than quality humor to engage viewers.
Spread
Through 2020 and early 2021, similar reaction images were posted on iFunny. For example, on October 6th, 2020, iFunny[2] user suicidalsquirrels posted a reaction image that received over 90 smiles in two years (shown below, left). On August 25th, 2021, iFunny[3] user Ship posted a reaction image that gained over 30 smiles in one year (shown below, right).
On September 21st, 2021, following the virality of Ankha Zone memes, iFunny[4] user Plytomax posted a Doge meme captioned, "No dumbass you didn't send me a meme, you literally just sent cropped porn with no punchline at all" (authorship unconfirmed, shown below). The post received over 170 smiles in eight months. On September 22nd and 23rd, the image was reposted[5] to the /r/dogelore subreddit and to iFunny,[6] where it received over 17,500 upvotes and 24,700 smiles in eight months, respectively.
The viral spread of the reaction image inspired more memes that mocked the Ankha Zone trend in the following weeks. For example, on October 9th, 2021, Twitter[7] user @robocola_ reacted with a Sonic the Hedgehog version, with the post gaining over 20 retweets and 480 likes in seven months (shown below, left).
After the Ankha Zone trend subsided, the reaction images regained virality in 2022, first during the prevalence of Italian Tifa memes in January and later during the prevalence of the NSFW Bowling Animations in April.
