My Momma Said refers to a series of image macros in which a photograph of American recording artist Cardi B as a child. Online, people have captioned the photograph with the phrasal template beginning with "My momma said," mimicking the speech patterns and attitude of a child.

Origin

On July 1st, 2018, Twitter ^[1] user @FendiVersace tweeted a photograph of Cardi B as a child and added the caption "My momma said y’all have to play with me." The post (shown below) received more than 41,000 retweets and 122,000 likes in less than two weeks.

Spread

The following day, Cardi B posted the tweet on her Instagram ^[2] account. The post received more than 3.3 million likes in less than two weeks.

Over the next week, people began posting variations of the template, adding different humorous requests from "momma." On July 9th, Twitter^[3] @Chris_CrossYa2x tweeted, "My momma said we got to watch you while you in the house, cause you steal." The post (shown below, left) received more than 26,000 retweets and 58,000 likes in two days.

That day, Cardi B posted another varaiton on her Instagram. The post was captioned "My momma said your daddy ain't in college, he in jail." Within two days, the post (shown below, center) received more than 2.6 million likes.

The next day, Twitter^[4] user @callmeomar tweeted, "My momma said I can’t sit down cuz y’all got roaches." The post (shown below, right) received more than 5,700 retweets and 12,000 likes in two days.

On July 9th, Twitter^[5] Twitter^[5] user @youreavegetable tweeted a photoshopped version of the image with the caption "Me: Get out of my room Sibling: I'm not in your room." The post (shown below) received more than 74,000 retweets and 167,000 likes in two days.

Several media outlets covered the popularity of the image and meme, including CNN,^[6] Complex^[7] and more.
