I seriously don't understand why this person was thinking when posting this. The way this was written almost makes it seem like this person is either trying to undermine every other character in the history of our collective mediums, or seems to have been convinced that every other video game had about as much depth as Mario.

To be honest, the latter is entirely possible. Last of Us 2 has such a broad appeal and marketing that even the person who barely plays games in their life would hear about it and probably buy it. Not to mention, the mass-media likes to portray every non-woke game as the proof that videogames aren't an adult medium yet.

Certain Sony fans think The Last of Us invented complexe narrative on videogames and every other game is Dumb Stripper Chainsaw 3000. Which is even impressive considered other Sony fans think Heavy Rain did that. Which is even more impressive considering an older group of Sony fans think FFVII invented it. It's like isolated echo chambers of people Sony convinced that their games(or exclusive one, in FFVII case) are the ultimate revolution.

Yeah I love how these delusional mouthpieces still tote FFVII to be the definitive Playstation game even though it isn't even made or published by Sony. The game that truly put the Playstation on the map was a freakin' third party hand me down. Damn thing was gonna have an N64 version for pity sake…..

Perhaps if that version wasn't cancelled, things would be a lot different with the gaming community than it is now….

But Rosalina also gained a new family with the Lumas and lives pretty happily on the comet observatory. She also may or may not be God.

Every single member of my Rimworld colony. The Original Three were all victims of an accident that left the stranded on the planet. Every single other member was someone who tried to attack, survived the hail of bullets that incapacitated them, and then survived imprisonment until Stockholm Syndrome set in. On top of that, they are now forced to fight their former allies to defend their new home.

Additionally the Non-Consensual Organ Arbitrage (what lesser minds call Organ Harvesting) operation takes it's mental toll on all but the most psychopathic individuals. But hey, we all do what we must to survive when Randy gives you a major artery blockage as a birthday gift. What does it matter exactly how much you or somebody else suffered, anyway? This isn't a contest – in real world everyone's suffering is valid and we should all comfort and help each other out instead of working on the oppression olympics or whatever; in fiction it's all about the strength of writing and characterization, with really good writer being able to elevate an objectively small adversity into a great tragedy, while all this angsty over-the-top drama shit just comes across as trying too hard.

I've said it before but I feel the need to say it again now that this has its own article. This person proceeded to reply to their own tweet with random shit like links to support BLM and whatever's going on in Yemen (not bad things on their own, but entirely unrelated), and, most bizarrely, an unrelated TikTok. Admittedly I think these are the only three examples, but they warrant mention for how surreal this is.

What's the meaning of the tweet? Are they praising the game because bad things happen to her? Or are they shitting on the game because they're upset from all the stupid bullshit that happens to her?

Because either way, having bad things happen to your character isn't good story telling. It's why people make fun of the "tragic backstory" cliche. And it's why people shit on this misery-porn simulator of a video game.

Of course, bad things occurring to your character is fine. Cause and effect, action and reaction. But they have to make sense. The reasons and reactions have to work out, both in the setting and with the characters.

A bad example? Having Joel conveniently teleport to Abby out of nowhere. Then suddenly turning the zombies into a Left 4 Dead horde so that they're forced to be together so she can kill him easily. It's contrived as fuck and makes no sense.

My favorite part was her noble sacrifice where the game basically just said "psyche! she's fine". It was maybe the only thing in the game that seemed like it was going to be decently done story-wise but no, it had to pull a twist and make the whole thing worthless. I've don't think I've ever seen a bigger "fuck you" from a video game that I had actually played, though I'm not sure why I expected better from Xenoblade 2.

      -7
      • RaccoonBL - 3 years ago

There was two reasons in the story that she sacrificed herself in the first place.
        1. After Rex has put his life on the line countless time for her, she wanted to for him.
        2. Both her and Aion were essentially designed around ending humanity. (Though Pyra and Mythra were more modified to fill that role instead of created for it). One of the major themes that gets incorporated after Pnuema is idea of changing reality, and that’s what she does. She changes the reality of both her and Aion being “World Destroyers” to “World Savers” and in doing so saved the people she loved.

Her living or dying doesn’t change any of that. So why is Pyra and Mythra alive at the end? Hope. The director of game has gone on record saying that he wanted to create a game that was filled with and looked at the positives of humanity after so many games giving a more negative outlook. (Exhibit A: The last of us part 2). Her being alive at the end reinforces the idea of hope.

Reducing everything into a “noble sacrifice” would have made it no better than The Last of us 2. Because just like that game, it would reduce the significance of the moment into nothing more than shock value for the sake of making you sad. It would not have been something “done decently story wise.” I also have no idea how can possibly interpret her being alive as a fuck you.

This reminds me how people like to argue which fictional character is stronger than the other. As if it takes any skill to write the most OP character ever. You can just make up a character on the spot and still be right.

    Like this:
Bob's mother wasn't around when he was born, and his father treated him very poorly growing up. He joined the military and lost all of his limbs in war. When he was in the hospital, he was served noticeably worse food than the rest of the patients because there was prejudiced against war veterans.

There, a character that went through more pain than Ellie.

Fuck X, robots can't feel pain; seriously, I hate Mega Man X's story, it's so poorly written and the very premise (X is the first robot with feelings) is so dumb when you take into account how much personality you see even in just the Classic series. There is not one game in the series where I thought the story made it better. At least the Zero series was mostly passable, though the fourth game was really fucking dumb. Note that, again, I am speaking strictly in terms of story.

Clearly a circlejerk made by Druckmann to counteract all the funny memes being made about this game. Either that or the person who made this meme has no relation to anyone in a seat of power at Naughty Dog or Sony and instead are people who have avoided all other media in the world and the only time they've ever come out from underneath a rock as to play the Last of Us games, because hooooooo boy there are countless characters that have been through more pain than her. For instance, literally any Walking Dead character. I imagine Maggie from The Walking Dead is watching Ellie go bawling her eyes out when Joel gets killed and goes "That's cute, at least HIS killer left Joel's head mostly intact. Trying to gather my husband's body was quite traumatic because his head was just EVERYWHERE."

But at least I can accept people having opinions like this about The Last of Us better than that "Name a more Iconic Duo" meme about……The Jenner sisters…..Or the "Name a badder bitch than Taylor Swift" AKA the person who doesn't even register on the list of "Baddest Bitches" and never will.

Eh I would argue that characters like Potemkin and Axl Low went through the worst pain.

Mostly because the latter spent a long time being shifted across multiple timelines just to return to his original timeline only to realized that not only is he not human to begin but also that he killed the very timeline he wished to be in with all of his friends and girlfriend in it.

And the latter was a slave soldier for a totalitarian country:

Or perhaps you mean Axl Low, who basically originated from (or so he thought) the 20th Century (in hindsight an edit button would of helped with the last sentence as I typed "latter" instead of former").

Hmm, yeah pretty much. Well maybe except for Jam, Bridget, and Slayer. I don't think they have a major tragic past like all the others.

Sure Bridget was forced to be another gender and Slayer's guild became a criminal organization, but those elements doesn't really seem to traumatized the characters in a negative way (with the former not really minding being a girl and the latter is, well, Slayer).

    -9
  • Shade.Usher - 3 years ago

There's still a vast over abundance of characters that have suffered more though such as:

    -Darth Vader
-Literally any Jedi that survived Order 66
    -The average Clone Trooper
    -Literally almost anyone from DanganRonpa
-The majority of Elfen Lied protagonists
-Oswald the Lucky Rabbit (Epic Mickey Characterization)
-Alan (he just wanted his cheese)
-Literally any scientist (excluding Breen) in Half-Life
-Chel, and GLaDOS too considering the whole Potato thing.
-Amy Hennig and everyone else Druckmann fucked in the ass to make this shit stain on the storytelling medium known as gaming.

I'll be honest, most of my knowledge of the game is through memes and the one time I browsed a wiki for 5 minutes a couple years ago. I've never played any of the games myself so I can't really say.

Well, you got the right idea. A lot of characters in Daganronpa go through a lot of shit. Many of them rival or beat Ellie too.

As for who had it the worst… I'm going to say Chihiro due to backstory, pre-game events, and mid-game events. All of it is completely undeserved, as Chihiro is a precious bean.

Though you could make a case for almost anyone in the series.

The character Potemkin is from the 22nd Century who lived on the airship continent known as Zepp. USSR and communism have already existed.

Or perhaps you mean Axl Low, who basically originated from (or so he thought) the 20th Century (in hindsight an edit button would of helped with the last sentence as I typed "latter" instead of former").

Similarly, Adam Jensen from Deus Ex: Human Revolution.
The guy got killed, as in he literally died, and he had a lot of his body replaced with cybernetics through extensive invasive surgery that regardless of what amount of morphine you could put through a human being, that would have been agonizing to say the very least.

His little sister Sherry is murdered. He gets overtaken and mind controlled by the same vampire who employed that murderer. His selfish desires for revenge result in (what he believes to be) the death of his friend. He is traumatized by false botched resurrections of both of them, only being saved because his friend was just unconscious. He learns that the reason he wasn't told his friend was alive is because if he knew, he would have actually gotten him killed. That same friend dies (for real this time) in order to save his life. A dog, another one of his friends, also dies to save his life. Two of the people closest to him actively get themselves killed in order to ensure that he doesn't.

    And that's just Part 3.

From Mass Effect you have also add Javik (who watched the Reapers killing his civilization), Wrex (who lived most of his life seeing his race was slowing dying) and Jack (who was kidnap and forced to turn intro a weapon by Cerberus, making her childhood a living nightmare).

Let's be really honest then, and just say practically the ENTIRE cast of Guilty Gear, since almost everyone has some sort of tragic backstory (outside of maybe Answer)

    0
    • BigK64 - 3 years ago

Hmm, yeah pretty much. Well maybe except for Jam, Bridget, and Slayer. I don't think they have a major tragic past like all the others.

Sure Bridget was forced to be another gender and Slayer's guild became a criminal organization, but those elements doesn't really seem to traumatized the characters in a negative way (with the former not really minding being a girl and the latter is, well, Slayer).

J'onn from JL's probably the saddest character of my childhood, there's no disconnect like how Clark was separated from his parents as a baby, he had memories of his wife and children and they died in a genocide, even after all that time accepting the loss he then had trouble starting a new life isolating himself in the watchtower until Diana tried helping him.

It was one hell of a journey, I feel like this show was underrated, or rather forgotten as generations rolled

Clementine from Telltales the Walking Dead went through alot more pain than Ellie. Finds her parents turned into zombies, the man that ended up being a surrogate father ends up becoming a zombie that she has to make a choice in either ending his life or not, the original survivors she's with that acted as her new parents end up dead and status unknown but likely dead respectively, the next group she joins ends up dying off one by one, and whoever becomes her next parental figure ends up dead if she didn't choose to walk away on her own with the newborn baby that ended up becoming like a sibling to her. And that's just in the first two Walking Dead games by Telltale.
