Overview

The Nashville Statement is a manifesto on gender and sexuality signed by more than 150 conservative Christian evangelical leaders in Nashville, Tennessee and released on August 29th, 2017.[1] Online, the manifesto was widely criticized for encouraging bigotry against the LGBTQ community.

Background

On August 29th, 2017, The Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood released a list titled "Nashville Statement,"[4] containing various prohibitions on sex and gender identity, including a declaration that homosexuality was an immoral sin.

Online Reactions

On August 29th, 2017 Twitter user BoringDrew posted a Distracted Boyfriend meme referencing it (shown below). The tweet gathered over 55,000 retweets and 150,000 likes in 24 hours.[2]

The same day, Redditor MagikkTrixx submitted a post to the /r/OutOfTheLoop[3] subreddit asking "What is the "Nashville Statement" people are talking about on Twitter?" Meanwhile, Nashville Mayor Megan Barry tweeted that the statement was "poorly named" and did "not represent the inclusive values of the city & people of Nashville" (shown below, left).[5] Within 48 hours, the tweet received upwards of 5,900 likes and 2,400 retweets. Also on August 29th, Twitter user @senCyr tweeted a "hold my beer" joke about the statement referencing a recent controversy with pastor Joel Osteen (shown below, right).
