No Nickelback November

About

No Nickelback November is a parody event of the more mainstream No Nut November except the participant has to abstain from listening to the rock band Nickelback each year over the course of November. Memes and reactions from those who either accidentally lost No Nickelback November or purposely wanted others to lose it began to spread in November 2023, particularly on TikTok.

Origin

On November 5th, 2022, TikToker @crystalllmao^[1] uploaded a typical No Nut November video in which she purposely signs herself up for NNN. In the TikTok description, however, she clarifies that "NNN" stands for "No Nickelback November," changing the initial joke to her purposely signing her and her boyfriend up to avoid Nickelback for the month (shown below). The post received over 240 likes in roughly a year and is the earliest known example to use No Nickelback November.

Spread

During November 2023, memes about No Nickelback November began to be increasingly made and spread around. On November 4th, 2023, Redditor u/goombygoomby^[2] uploaded a Chad Driver variation in which the Chad Driver can be seen driving off into the sunset after the caption reads that they failed No Nickelback November already (shown below). On November 7th, the meme was reposted to the /r/dankmemes^[4] subreddit, receiving over 1,500 upvotes in less than 24 hours.

On TikTok, memes about No Nickelback November evolved to incorporate an extra layer of meta context to them in 2023. With the point of No Nickelback November being not listening to Nickelback, TikToks made about No Nickelback November that featured Nickelback songs would cause people to lose it. This would create an effect similar to "THE GAME" in which spreading awareness also ensures defeat.

For example, on November 4th, TikToker heyitswoodyky^[3] uploaded a TikTok of him at the gym with Nickelback playing as he declared that he lost NNN on November 1st at 1 a.m. (shown below).
