The dance trend started in late May 2026 by TikToker @sad_i_e and continued to spread through June and July 2026. In late July 2026, after the release of a video about the dance by @flighthouse, it became the subject of criticism and mockery for being perceived as tone-deaf and potentially insensitive, considering the dark subject matter of the movie.

On May 29th, 2026, TikToker^[1] @sad_i_e posted an original dance set to the audio from a scene in the 2026 horror movie Obsession in which Nikki (Inde Navarrette) has a meltdown during dinner at a restaurant and yells, "No, no, no! Don't do that!" The video gained over 2.5 million views in two months.

Spread

The Obsession Dance then spread between late May and July 2026, primarily on TikTok.

On May 30th, 2026, TikToker^[2] @daproppelerbaddies posted a video where two women do the dance, garnering over 524,000 views in two months.

On May 31st, TikToker^[3] @lina.sunmee posted a video of a group of women doing the dance, garnering over 3.7 million views in two months.

On July 2nd, 2026, the @flighthouse TikTok^[4] account posted a video in which one woman has to guess what dance another woman is doing. The dance in the video is the Obsession dance. The video gained over 11 million views in four weeks.

On July 28th, TikToker^[5] @diamonds8730 posted a video compiling several examples of the dance under the caption, "I'm sorry but who tf made this a dance," garnering over 1.4 million views in three days.

On July 30th, 2026, TikToker^[6] @ajyaps69_ posted a video where he reacts to the video by @flighthouse and goes on a rant about how much of a mistake the rise of technology in general has been, garnering over 3.3 million views in a day.
