About

On Wednesdays We Wear Pink is a quote uttered by the character Karen Smith (played by Amanda Seyfried) in the 2004 comedy film Mean Girls. Online, the catchphrase is used as a simple image macro meme depicting Seyfried's character and the line to remind people that it is Wednesday, joke about wearing pink and also poke fun at arbitrary decisions similar to the choice of the characters in the film to wear pink on Wednesdays. The image macro and phrase are also used as a phrasal template with people swapping out various parts of the quote, as well as the catchphrase itself being used in conjunction with other random images or by itself.

Origin

The scene used in the meme originally comes from a moment towards the beginning of Mean Girls, released on April 30th, 2004. The phrase is said by Amanda Seyfried's character, as shown in the YouTube clip below.[1]

While the first instance of the meme is unknown, according to a reverse image search on Tineye,[6] the most common image macro was originally posted on the fashion website We Heart It on May 2nd, 2010 (seen below). Additionally, a peak in the posting of this version occurred in spring 2014, coinciding with the film's 10-year anniversary, which was recorded in The Guardian[5] that year as many dressed up in pink and posted pictures of themselves online to commemorate the film's release.

In addition to the variant picturing Amanda Seyfried's character, many subsequent memes paired the text with Rachel McAdams' character, Regina George, and a screen grab typically associated with the Stop Trying To Make Fetch Happen meme from the same film (shown below).

Spread

While earlier versions of the meme featured the catchphrase paired only with Mean Girls characters, later versions showed others wearing pink and used the same catchphrase in various image macros. One such example comes from a 2014 meme created on the site Quickmeme,[2] which received almost 160 shares over the course of eight years (seen below).
