So You Agree

About

So You Agree is a memorable quote uttered by the character Regina George in the 2004 comedy film Mean Girls. Online, people use the quote and an image of the character to highlight another's hypocrisy.

Origin

On April 30th, 2004, Paramount Pictures released the film Mean Girls in the United States.^[1] In the film, Regina George and Cady Heron (portrayed by Rachel McAdams and Lindsay Lohan have the following exchange about Cady's appearance:

Regina: But you’re like really pretty.

Cady: Thanks.

Regina: So you agree…

Cady: What?

Regina: You think you’re really pretty?

Regina traps Cady into saying that she finds herself pretty, before making her feel ashamed of the admission (clip below).

Spread

Over the next decade, people used the expression and scene as a reaction GIF. For example, on December 11th, 2013, Redditor^[2] bbgurl posted a GIF of the scene in the /r/reactiongifs subreddit (shown below).

On July 5th, 2020, Twitter user @NoEmmeG tweeted,^[3] "so you agree. wages should be higher?" in response to the tweet about unemployment. The post received more than 100,000 likes and 28,000 retweets in less than 24 hours (shown below, left).

The following day, Twitter^[4] user @ahsehtho tweeted the image in response to a tweet from conservative commentator Tomi Lahren. They wrote, "So you agree. People that don’t like their country should be able to leave and choose another country to live in." The post received more than 528,000 likes and 137,000 retweets in less than one month (shown below, center).

Following the post, others began using the format to point out various people unintentionally making another person's argument (example below, right).

On July 9th, the website StayHipp^[5] published an article about the meme.
