Rubin references known climate change deniers in his arguments against climate change, provides broad opinion without any substantiation (US foreign intervention - IE the Vietnam War) was "mostly good", and peddles outright untruths (The Ukraine is Part of NATO) with a gaudy confidence typically reserved for commentators who know what they're talking about. He attacks "the left" as if it were an incoherent abstraction, never engages with the ideas of a single leftist thinker, and dabbles in cliche's that would make Dan Brown Jealous. It read like a work penned by a man who doesn't read, and proofread by an editor who wasn't being paid. This book is no more intellectually rigorous than any other subway stand tabloid. The jokes are bad. The punchlines don't hit. And the writing, by god, the writing, it's about as bad as you'd expect from a man who says things like "the dial of ideas is quickly moving to the hot position." No one with a functional brain, whose ever read anything ever, could possibly, under any circumstance, enjoy this work. One star. Helpful Report Don't Burn This Book: Dave Rubin loves to talk about Thinking for Yourself in an Age of Unreason Dave Rubin ideas. In his new book, Don't Burn This Book, he tells the reader: Sentinel, pp.256, $27.00 I want you to walk into a bar and order yourselves a full-bodied opinion. I want you to get absolutely wasted on facts until 3:00 a.m., and then, when you're just about ready to pass out, I want you to get another large glass of reality and chug it.' It's telling that Rubin suggests that we order the opinion before the facts. Would it not make more sense to suggest, say, blending a cocktail of facts into an opinion? Rubin's advice seems backwards to me. But it would be wrong to take this suggestion seriously. Don't Burn This Book is not a serious work. It is, in fact, extremely lazy, bearing all the hallmarks of a project that was knocked together over a few wet weekends. Rubin loves to talk about 'ideas' as an abstraction, yet he does not love to talk about ideas themselves. For example, he constantly rails against the progressive left, yet quotes almost no left-wing thinkers Though he says he hates identity politics, Rubin never misses an opportunity to remind the reader that he's a married gay man as evidence of his "liberal" bona fides. Rubin touts his paid appearances at conservative events as proof of their open-mindedness and tolerance, especially compared to the rigidly dogmatic left. And even when presented with an easy lay-up of an opportunity to take issue with Trump, he demurs. Writing about Trump's border wall, something generally opposed by libertarians, Rubin refuses to take a stand, literally writing that he's not advocating for it but also doesn't oppose it. He adds with comedic flourish, "you could say I'm sitting on the fence – waka! waka!" He makes gobsmackingly reductive arguments. Among them, the Nazis were actually of the left because the word "socialist" is in the National Socialist Party name and Hitler was an "art-loving vegetarian." He argues that the disastrous and immoral US military intervention into Vietnam was good because "our contribution secured much-needed freedoms." Rubin the "old-school liberal" even deploys the old Republican saw about the "Democrat Party" being the party of slavery 160 years ago, as if neither party had undergone substantial philosophical and demographic shifts in the century-and-a-half since. DON'T BUY DAVE RUBIN'S BOOK A Vacuous Man E arly in the book, Rubin criticizes German chancellor Angela Merkel for accepting "millions of immigrants from Iraq, Syria, and Afghanistan and other troubled nations." Later he criticizes Barack Obama for drawing a red line in Syria and not following through, mocking Obama for making America look like a “paper tiger" that a "stiff wind" could knock over. You wouldn't know it from reading Rubin, but most of these "immigrants" were in fact refugees fleeing from conflicts the United States had unleashed. Rubin's decision to ignore or even condemn millions ofvictims fleeing humanitarian catastrophes, while complaining about the damage to America's reputation, speaks to his vacuous politics. For Rubin, everything operates at the surface, on the level of affect, completely removed from the real complexities of the world and its moral challenges. Ironically, even the history of classical liberalism is not spared this reductive flatness. Andrew L. About

Dave Rubin is an American political commentator and stand-up comedian. He is best known as the host of The Rubin Report, a political talk show on YouTube that mainly focuses on identity politics, freedom of speech, and other domestic issues. He is also notable for popularizing several terms and phrases, particularly the term Regressive Left.

History

On February 16th, 2013, Rubin began co-hosting on the liberal news network TYT (The Young Turks). He frequently premiered on TYT’s main network show as a panel guest and also hosted his own YouTube channel/TYT show full-time show named The Rubin Report.

He left his TYT job on March 2nd, 2015, to work full time as a host on The Rubin Report in partnership with RYOT.com for a short time before partnering with Ora TV in August 2015.



The Rubin Report

In its inception, the Rubin Reports structure was a round table discussion talk show where Dave and a guest panel would talk about current events and trending topics.



On June 13th, 2016, The Rubin Report left Ora TV and became independent via fan supported patron donations, and since then The Rubin Report has significantly evolved. The show's structure currently consists of a one-on-one hour-long conversation between Rubin and a weekly guest. Additionally, the show includes a segment entitled "The Direct Message" where Dave directly looks into the camera and gives his views on current events. Some notable guests include Milo Yiannopoulos, Sam Harris, Adam Carolla and Larry King.



Twitter Bot Complaint

On May 30th, 2019, Rubin tweeted,[1] "A crazy amount of anonymous accounts keep telling me to fuck myself, how much they hate me, and that I should do my show the way they demand. This is obviously at least partially coordinated and I already have some evidence. Any thoughts, @jack @TwitterSupport?" The tweet received more than 6,400 likes, 2,800 comments and 1,100 retweets in 24 hours (shown below).

Following the tweet, people began trolling Rubin, posting images and messages featuring variations of the phrase "Go Fuck Yourself" (examples below).

On May 30th, The Daily Dot [2] published a report on the tweet.

Reputation

Rubin is considered a member of the Intellectual Dark Web (IDW),
an unofficial band of public figures who espouse controversial ideas and beliefs surrounding subjects related to free speech, identity politics and biology.

Criticisms

In 2018, the Guardian[3] included Rubin and his show in a piece entitled "YouTube's 'alternative influence network' breeds rightwing radicalisation, report finds." The article uses Rubin's interview with conspiracy theorist Stefan Molyneux, who according to the piece "openly promotes scientific racism and advocates for the men’s rights movement" during the interview. They write, "Although Rubin doesn’t endorse these views, he doesn’t challenge them in any substantive way and appears to take his words at face value." They cite a study on the effects of this in study about political YouTube channels, like Rubin's. It states:

This type of scientific racism has been used to justify racial hierarchies and oppression for centuries. By letting him speak without providing a legitimate and robust counterargument, Rubin provides a free platform for white supremacist ideology on his channel.
