Pop Tart State Traditions refer to photos of snacks portrayed in unconventional ways, which people sarcastically claim are a delicacy in their respective states.
Origin
On November 10th, 2017, Twitter user and Iowa State University student @cjorgensen79[1] uploaded pictures of Pop Tarts with a slice of cheese between them. He captioned the pictures "You ain’t from Iowa if you never had one of these." The tweet gained over 1,100 retweets and 4,000 likes (shown below).
Spread
Three days after the tweet, the Iowa State University Police Twitter account quote-tweeted it with the caption "You're under arrest."[2] This tweet went viral, gaining over 243,000 retweets and 652,000 likes (shown below).
Following that tweet going viral, several other Twitter users uploaded variations on the original joke, using different snacks and states. On November 21st, Twitter user @adumsteeves[3] uploaded an image of mustard on a Pop Tart, saying it was an Illinois delicacy, gaining 48 retweets and 80 likes (shown below, left). Twitter user @cjt12371[4] uploaded a similar joke with ranch dressing and Oklahoma, gaining over 890 retweets and 2,400 likes (shown below, right).
On November 20th, the Pop Tarts twitter account quote-tweeted cjt12371's tweet saying "This is just disrespectful.[5] The tweet gained over 181,000 retweets and 524,000 likes (shown below). The Daily Dot[6] covered the Spread of the meme.
