About
Princess Jane refers to a short viral video in which an AI-generated character, a short princess character named Princess Jane, says she will "do a trick," then dissolves and comes back into frame. The clip was shared by a Twitter user who said the video was part of his plan to create "a complete animated movie with AI." However, the video was widely mocked and parodied online in the days after it was posted in early September 2023.
Origin
On September 2nd, 2023, Twitter user @Rufus87078959[1] responded to a prompt by user @icreatelife asking smaller creators to "share their work" with a video from an apparent AI-generated animated movie he was working on. The video shows an AI-generated princess character named "Princess Jane" announcing in a robotic speech that she will do a trick. The character then dissolves and returns to the frame while an off-screen audience erupts in applause (shown below). The video gained over 3,400 retweets, 19,000 likes and 6,700 quote-tweets, the lattermost of which largely came from people making fun of the video. It was also reposted to YouTube by user @iCHIKO_.[2]

Spread
The video was swiftly mocked by many Twitter users as it spread on the platform, many of whom criticized it for being soulless or perceivably poor quality. On September 3rd, 2023, Twitter user @kuntimora[3] insulted it using the "Do You Take Constructive Criticism?" meme template, gaining over 210 retweets and 15,000 likes in three days (shown below, left).
The same day, Dolan Dark offered it sarcastic praise,[4] writing, "Looks great bro I especially liked the part where she turned into a jpeg before turning into dust, keep it up," gaining over 120 retweets and 12,000 likes in a similar timeframe (shown below, right).
On September 4th, Dolan Dark posted about the video to one of their tertiary YouTube accounts, gaining over 29,000 views in two days (shown below).
Meanwhile, other Twitter users made memes about the video, usually sarcastically praising the quality of the animation. For example, on September 5th, Twitter user @THISH3LL[5] posted a joke about Princess Jane dethroning Barbie at the box office, gaining over 70 likes in less than one day (shown below, left). The same day, user @Johnnyneff_[6] quoted the video to parody an Apple advertisement showing the company's logo dissolving, gaining over 690 retweets and 5,100 likes in a similar timeframe (shown below, right).
