PS5 Design Parodies, also known as PlayStation 5 Design Parodies, refers to a series of photoshopped images and memes featuring the video game console's promotional photos after Sony revealed the PlayStation 5 in June 2020 during a livestream event. Typically, these parodies mocked the PS5's likeness to various pop culture references or other existing technology. The trend quickly spread across several websites and social media platforms following Sony's reveal.
Origin
On June 11th, 2020, Sony unveiled the upcoming PS5 during its "The Future of Gaming Show," debuting new games and hardware alongside the console's new flashy design (seen below). Though some responded positively to the futuristic, black-and-white aesthetic of the console, many online began mocking it through various parodies and memes.
Spread
Following the PS5's reveal, users began posting parodies of the console design to various sites and social media. One such example was tweeted by Twitter[1] user glacear_ on June 11th, 2020. The tweet (shown below) depicts a WIFI router with two pieces of paper attached to either side, receiving over 7,000 likes and 2,000 retweets. On June 11th, 2020, the Instagram[2] account daquan reposted a similar example and received over 718,000 likes.
On June 11th, 2020, Twitter[3] user SavinTheBees tweeted a version referencing the Piper Perri Surrounded meme (seen below), receiving over 5,400 likes and 1,100 retweets. The official Twitch Twitter[4] account also tweeted "Who wore it better? #PS5," featuring the console next to a First Order stormtrooper helmet, which received over 26,000 likes, 3,500 retweets and 600 replies with several other parodies.
On June 11th, 2020, IGN tweeted "The #PS5 looks like," prompting users to reply with their takes on the design, including Twitter[5] user NIL66CAT who uploaded an image of Sauron's tower, receiving nearly 2,000 likes and 200 retweets (shown below).
Redditor[6] Madsbjoern posted a variant to the r/ShitPostCrusaders sub on June 11th, 2020, depicting Jotaro Kujo from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure photoshopped with the PS5 (seen below), receiving over 29,000 upvotes and 170 comments. On June 11th, 2020, Redditor[7] coolboy70421 posted another example to the r/PewdiepieSubmissions sub with Dr. Heinz Doofenshmirtz and received nearly 45,000 upvotes and 258 comments.
On June 11th, 2020, Redditor[8] atomic_49_blin posted a photoshopped version of the You Know I Had to Do It to Em meme to the r/blursedimages sub (shown below) where it received over 30,000 upvotes and 115 comments. Twitter[9] user Danny8bit then uploaded a photo of a PS2 wedged between a white binder on June 11th, 2020, receiving over 147,000 likes, 34,000 retweets and 500 comments. The 9GAG Instagram[10] account also reposted the image, where it received over 695,000 likes.
