Reddit atheism is a pejorative term used by both religious and non-religious people to refer to the antireligious position. The reference to Reddit derives from the behavior of the R/atheism subreddit. The term is usually paired with the neckbeard stereotype. In modern usage, it is sometimes contrasted with the 'TikTok Christian' stereotype, which describes a Christian that is bad at apologetics.

Background

In 2006, British evolutionary biologist and ethologist Richard Dawkins released The God Delusion. The book argues that belief in a personal god is delusional and that there is strong contradictory evidence against the existence of God. The book brought the antireligious position into the mainstream and received extremely mixed reviews from both sides of the argument, with some claiming Dawkins did not do proper research and committed multiple straw man fallacies against theism. In 2008, the subreddit, R/atheism, was created and became the largest forum for atheists on the internet.

Origin

The first known usage of the term "Reddit Atheism" was on September 25th, 2017. It was used to refer to users of the R/atheism subreddit in SootHouse's video, "The Faces of Reddit Atheism." In the video, he looks at the responses to a 'Faces of Atheism' contest held on R/atheism. The video amassed 2.4M views in 8 years.
