Related Explainer: What Is The Rice Purity Test? The Quiz That Inspired Trends Like The Innocence Test Explained

About

The Rice Purity Test is a quiz containing 100 questions about one's sexual life, relationships and delinquent experiences. The taker is given a score ranging from 0 to 100 after selecting various applicable options from the list of questions, with a high score indicating higher "purity" and vice versa. The test was originally published in 1924 by the Rice Thresher, Texas Rice University's undergraduate newspaper, before it was published on the internet at RicePurityTest.com in 2012 and later trending online in the late 2010s and 2020s. Quizzes like the Rice Purity Test notably inspired similar trends like the Innocence Test in 2021 and 2022.

Origin

Purity tests are a common college and internet phenomenon, with Columbia University's The Jester reporting on a campus-wide "purity test" conducted at Barnard College in October 1935.[1] Other examples of Purity Tests circulated in colleges include a "Virtue Test" that was circulated at Indiana University in 1939 and a Unisex Purity Test from MIT that predates the 1980s.[2]

The original Rice Purity Test was first published in 1924 and was only given to women. The shorter test featured questions like "Have you ever been engaged and broken it?" as opposed to the more sexually charged questions shown in the latest version of the test. The questions “Have you ever cheated?” and “Have you ever been drunk?” survived from the original version of the test.[3]

By the 2000s, the Rice Purity Test had evolved into a standard orientation week practice for new undergraduate students at Rice University in Texas. In 2011, the Rice Thresher editors refused to publish the annual Rice Purity test on account of it containing references to non-consensual and homosexual sexual activities. An edited version of the test that removed such references was subsequently published in 2012 and remains hosted at RicePurityTest.com.[4]

According to an article published by the Rice Thresher on August 23rd, 2017, the official Rice Purity Test website saw over 1.5 million visits in 2017.[12]
