Origin
On September 9th, 2021, the trailer for The Matrix Resurrections was released. In the trailer, there is a brief shot of Keanu Reeves lying in a bathtub with a rubber duck on his head (shown below).
Spread
Shortly after the trailer was released, the image of Keanu with a duck on his head was used as a reaction image, primarily with captions implying the poster is looking forward to something or feels foolish. For example, user @patrickhwillems[1] posted the image with the caption "live look at me thinking about the matrix resurrections for the next three months," gaining over 120 retweets and 1,100 likes (shown below, left). User @rosstmiller[2] wrote, "Keanu Reeves in a bathtub with a rubber duck on his head. That's it, that's the tweet," gaining over 90 retweets and 400 likes (shown below, right). Jokes about the duck on Keanu's head were covered by Uproxx.[3]
