Origin

On March 3rd, 2021, Facebook^[1] user Sin Achilles uploaded a compilation edit of cats wearing banana suits. The post received more than 7,700 reactions and 26,000 shares in two years (shown below).

On March 17th, 2023, TikTok^[2] user @happyhappiihappy uploaded the earliest appearance of Sad Banana Cat in a Happy Happy Happy Cat video showing the cat going to the hospital. The video received more than 5,500 likes in two months (shown below).

Since its appearance in Happy Happy Happy Cat videos, the Sad Banana Cat gained popularity in fan art and edits. For example, on March 17th, 2023, Facebook^[3] user Sollyz Sundyz uploaded fan art of Happy Happy Happy Cat and Sad Banana Cat. The post received more than 5,400 reactions and 9,400 shares in two months (shown below, left). On April 22nd, 2023, Facebook^[4] user Mai Thanathorn uploaded a 3D version of Sad Banana Cat to the "3D Modeling, Texturing, Rendering, Rigging, Animation" group. The post received 955 reactions and 243 shares in three weeks. On April 26th, 2023, Facebook^[5] user Mim reposted the image and received more than 43,000 reactions and 12,000 shares in two weeks (shown below, right).

On May 4th, 2023, Facebook^[6] page Tiệm Cafe wibu gió vàng phía đông bắc Morioh uploaded a video of someone creating a Sad Banana Cat in 3D print then painting it (authorship unconfirmed). The video received more than 59,000 reactions and 6,800 shares in one week (shown below).
