On March 17th, 2023, TikTok[2] user @happyhappiihappy uploaded the earliest appearance of Sad Banana Cat in a Happy Happy Happy Cat video showing the cat going to the hospital. The video received more than 5,500 likes in two months (shown below).

Since its appearance in Happy Happy Happy Cat videos, the Sad Banana Cat gained popularity in fan art and edits. For example, on March 17th, 2023, Facebook[3] user Sollyz Sundyz uploaded fan art of Happy Happy Happy Cat and Sad Banana Cat.
