About

Save Scumming is a slang term referring to the practice of saving progress in a video game before a difficult challenge or an event involving RNG in order to load the game and try again in case the desired result is not reached, reloading the game as many times as needed to reach that result. The practice is sometimes frowned upon by some gamers, who argue that save-scumming takes away from the challenge and allows the player to avoid much of the risk-taking, igniting debates in gaming communities online. The term has also been referenced in numerous memes since appearing around the early 2000s.

Origin

While the term "save scumming," used to describe the practice of repeatedly reloading a save in a video game until a desired result is reached, likely appeared in the early 2000s, the practice had already been recognized by video game developers as early as in the mid-1990s. Notably, a manual for the 1996 role-playing video game The Elder Scrolls II: Daggerfall includes a section that advises the player not to use the "Replay the Save Game" strategy to avoid negative consequences of failed actions and encourages them to play out all experiences, good and bad (extract shown below).[1]

The "Replay the Save Game" Strategy Most computer gamers use the save game to maximize their playing ability. Any- time something goes wrong, they return to a saved game and replay it until they get it right. The final history of their game looks like an endless streak of lucky breaks and perfect choices. Role-playing is not about playing the perfect game. It is about building a character and creating a story. Bethesda Softworks has worked very hard to make The Elder Scrolls: Daggerfall a game that does not require players to replay their mistakes. All adversity can be overcome, excepting only the character's actual death. In fact, you will never see some of the most interesting aspects of the game unless you play through your mistakes. If your character dies, gets locked in a dungeon, or some other truly catastrophic event takes place, by all means return to your last saved game and replay it. How- ever, if your character is caught pickpocketing, if a quest goes wrong, or some other mundane mishap occurs, let it play out. You may be surprised by what happens next.

The earliest discovered instance of the use of the phrase "save-scumming" is a December 15th, 2003, post on a gaming forum[2] dedicated to an open-source turn-based strategy game The Battle for Wesnoth made by user Integral (shown below, left), although it's very likely the phrase appeared and was used earlier.

The expression achieved initial popularization on various gaming forums in the early and mid-2000s. For example, on January 1st, 2006, user BeefontheBone made a comment about save-scumming in a thread about Civilization IV on Civilization Fanatics Center forum (shown below, right).[3]

I don't want to loose all my level 3 units 66 It's way too hard. There are so many fast trolls pouring in north of Li'Sar and each of them does heavy damage every turn, killing even Paladins easily. After several tries. I've managed to come close to the leader with a Druid escorted group of Avengers and an Arch Mage. But meanwhile, further trolls move fast into the back of my remaining units. Daniel I think you want to try the Dwarf Horde approach -- cheap, disposable, and they don't suck in caves! (unlike Paladins and Avengers) Of course, Shydes and mages for backup are useful. I finished this level by recruiting tons of dwarves (and recalling a few magic-users) and pushing the trolls back into the bottlenecks with them. Also by, um, lots of save-scumming. (but I think that I wouldn't need so much if I played it again, I'm starting to get the hang of thinking ahead to keep units alive) The toughest part was the battle in the starting area, where I had to use lots of magic-users and heros to kill all the level-3 trolls that jump on you immediately. BeefontheBone Windbag of the sea Jan 1, 2006 #4 The seed is fixed very deliberatley, in order to prevent the save scumming exploit (although they put an option in the last patch to reenable it).

Spread

On August 1st, 2010, TV Tropes user Thessalor added an entry on save scumming to the site.[4] On September 2nd, 2013, Urban Dictionary[5] user TorpedoMoo added a definition for the term.

Throughout the 2010s, the term saw extensive use in gaming discussions on gaming forums, gaming communities on Reddit and imageboards such as 4chan. Notably, the term has been brought up in discussions of role-playing video games such as Baldur's Gate and Fallout (when a failed skill check could lead to an undesired outcome affecting the entire course of a questline), grand strategy games such as Crusader Kings and Total War (where results of a single event could affect the direction of the entire playthrough) and in other games where RNG is involved (such as the XCOM and Football Manager series and Rimworld).

On February 24th, 2016, artist JHallComics published a comic titled "THE SCUM OF XCOM" about save scumming in XCOM 2 to Dorkly.[6]

THESE PUNY HUMANS DON'T SSSTAND A CHANCE AGAINST OUR SSSUPERIOR TECHNOLOGY. YEAH, BUT THEY DO HAVE SAVE SCUMMING. Starting in the late 2010s, memes about save scumming started gaining prevalence within the game communities where the practice was employed. For example, on April 19th, 2019, Redditor lzyan posted a Football Manager meme that received over 2,300 upvotes in /r/footballmanagergames[7] in four years (shown below, left).

On March 23rd, 2020, Redditor MChainsaw posted an Alignment Chart meme that received over 3,300 upvotes in the /r/paradoxplaza[8] subreddit in three years (shown below, right).

When you save-scum in major cup finals Guilt fades. Hardware is forever. Doesn't play Ironman but still never save scums; only makes backup saves in case a save file gets corrupted. LAWFUL GOOD Plays Ironman so they can't save scum. LAWFUL NEUTRAL Plays Ironman but crashes the game as much as they can to turn things in their favor anyway. LAWFUL EVIL Only save scums if a bug screws them over or they make a simple but significant mistake, such as misclicking the wrong casus belli. NEUTRAL GOOD Doesn't save scum minor mistakes but will do it if things go badly enough. TRUE NEUTRAL Save scums liberally but claims they never do whenever they brag about their accomplishments on the internet. NEUTRAL EVIL Save scums if they think it can make the game more fun to play, and not necessarily just when things go badly. CHAOTIC GOOD Save scums every time anything doesn't go precisely the way they want it to. CHAOTIC NEUTRAL Save scums in multiplayer. CHAOTIC EVIL

In August 2023, the debate surrounding save scumming in video games was reignited by the release of the role-playing video game Baldur's Gate 3 in which some players employed the approach to better tailor their relationship with their party members and to avoid unlucky rolls (examples posts shown below).

Load Game Karlach disapproves. Chris @timeachris "Baldur's Gate doesn't promote save scumming", I say as I reload the same encounter over and over again until I achieve my desired results. 10:44 PM · Aug 13, 2023 52.2K Views
