About
Scary Soda is an ironic two-sentence horror story about a person who gets thirsty and drinks some soda, only to find out afterwards that it is "scary soda." The story was posted to Reddit's /r/TwoSentenceHorror forum sometime around July 2022 but was removed, gaining viral spread over the following months through reposts and inspiring further memes referencing it on sites including Twitter, iFunny, Reddit and TikTok.
Origin
On July 2nd, 2022, iFunny[1] user pete_the_pickle posted a screenshot of a now-deleted post to /r/TwoSentenceHorror by an unknown user reading, "I was getting thirsty so I had a sip of soda. It was too late when I realized it was scary soda." This is the earliest known repost of the story online (shown below).

Spread
The story gained viral spread over the following months as people shared the screenshot. On July 21st, 2022, the story was reposted by Instagram[2] user @yodeling.panther, garnering over 4,500 likes in a year. On July 30th, Redditor /u/Ecstatic-Ad5850 posted a trollge meme referencing the story to /r/distressingmemes,[3] garnering over 280 upvotes in 10 months (shown below).
The meme saw a boost in popularity in 2023. On February 23rd, Twitter[12] account @GoodReddit shared it, garnering over 37,000 likes in four months. On March 10th, 2023, Instagram[4] user _kingorange posted it, garnering over 95,000 likes in three months. On March 24th, TikToker[5] @imissjakenovak posted a video referencing the story, garnering over 240,000 views in the same span of time (shown below, left). On March 31st, TIkToker[6] @ashteekee posted a video showing the story followed by a drawing of scary soda, garnering over 87,000 views in three months (shown below, right).

On April 20th and 22nd, Redditors u/NiteTerur and u/SneedPlays posted the story to /r/MoldyMemes[7] and /r/shitposting[8] respectively, garnering over 6,000 upvotes and 2,100 upvotes in two months. On May 12th, Redditor /u/Historical-Sugar7763 posted a trollface incident meme to /r/distressingmemes[9] referencing it that garnered over 5,100 upvotes in a month (shown below, left). On May 20th, iFunny[10] user shoenessperson posted a scary soda meme that gained over 9,600 smiles in a month (shown below, right).
On May 23rd, TikToker[11] @wilsonwhisk posted a video referencing the meme that garnered over 2.5 million views in two weeks (shown below).
