Schizophrenia Update, also known as They Added Schizophrenia, refers to a series of video game clips in which enemies unexplainably disappear from their expected position, with the videos explaining the disappearances with the game getting a "schizophrenia update," with schizophrenia being a mental disease which symptoms can include auditory and visual hallucinations. Spawned by a viral meme in November 2023, the format achieved moderate popularity on TikTok.

Origin

On November 11th, 2023, TikTok[1] user @etheyl.r6 posted a Fortnite clip of a player unexpectedly losing sight of their opponent captioned, "Nah bro epic definitely added schizophrenia." The post (shown below) received over 3 million views and 207,000 likes in five months (shown below).

Spread

The post was followed by more users on TikTok posting gameplay clips depicting opponents suddenly disappearing, explaining the disappearances with the game getting a "schizophrenia update."

For example, on November 11th, 2023, TikTok[2] user @scliffler posted a Minecraft clip that received over 10.7 million views and 1.8 likes in five months (shown below, left). On December 23rd, TikTok[3] user vixios posted another Minecraft version that garnered over 6.5 million views and 549,000 likes in four months (shown below, right).

More videos based on the format were spread on TikTok, YouTube and other platforms in 2024. For example, on March 17th, 2024, X[4] account @tradeit_gg posted a Counter-Strike 2 version of the meme that received over 620 reposts and 7,600 likes in one month (shown below).
