Shower Orange or Eating Oranges In the Shower refers to the practice of eating an orange while taking a shower, allowing you to eat the orange without worrying about any mess caused by the juice. The practice, which is often alleged to be good for your mental health, first became popularized on Reddit in April 2015, inspiring the /r/ShowerOrange subreddit that month and becoming increasingly popular across social media over the following years.

On April 14th, 2015, a now-deleted Redditor commented on a post to /r/AskReddit^[1] asking, "What's something unconventional everyone should try out?" telling users about how great it is to eat an orange in the shower, garnering over 5,400 upvotes in eight years (shown below). That day, the /r/ShowerOrange^[2] subreddit was started by u/CACTUS_VISIONS.

Ok so this is going to sound real weird… but here it goes.

In 2005 at BeachBreak, Camp Darby Italy. On a club beyond youth trip my male councilor told me something I would never forget.

He said "PHOTON_BANDIT, would you like to know the most liberating, carnal, and best feel good thing you can ever experience is?"

Of course I said yes.

"Have you ever eaten a orange in the shower?"

"no… no i havent"

"Well just think about it PHOTON_BANDIT. Tearing apart a cold fresh orange with your bare hands, just letting the juices run over your body. Not worrying if your going to get sticky, or anything. Just ripping it in half, and tearing into it with your teeth like a savage cannibal who hasnt eaten in a week! Yes PHOTON_BANDIT, this is the most carnal, ferocious, liberating thing a man can do"

And from that day forward, I start my mornings with an orange in the shower.

Spread

The /r/ShowerOrange subreddit gained over 80,000 members over the following years, with posts including memes about eating oranges in the shower, photos of people eating oranges in the shower and discussions about the benefits of the act. The idea also spread across social media. On February 8th, 2017, Men's Health^[3] published an article about it, followed by Vice^[4] on February 24th. Many of the top posts on /r/ShowerOrange^[5][6][7] were posted between 2019 and 2020 (examples shown below).

On March 8th, 2017, YouTubers^[15] Good Mythical Morning posted a video where they eat showers in the orange and report their results, both finding the practice disappointing, garnering over 3.2 million views in six years (shown below).

On May 3rd, 2020, TikToker^[8] @lilyrosenthall posted a video eating an orange in the shower, garnering over 300,000 views in three years (shown below, left). On November 24th, TikToker^[9] @smallex4ft11 posted a video encouraging viewers to eat oranges in the shower, garnering over 566,000 views in the same rough span of time (shown below, right). On January 22nd, 2021, Pure Wow^[10] published an article about the practice.

On December 30th, 2022, TikToker^[11] @lifewjan posted a video espousing the benefits of eating oranges in the shower, garnering over 4 million views three months (shown below). On February 27th, 2023, HuffPost^[12] published an article on the practice's popularity on TikTok, followed by The Guardian^[13] the next day. On March 7th, the New York Post^[14] published an article about it.
