About

SocialAI is a microblogging social media platform similar in design to Twitter / X, with the key difference from similar platforms being that users don't interact with each other but instead with an infinite number of AI-generated bots tailored to interact solely with their posts. The app launched in mid-September 2024 and was immediately met with pushback, criticism and jokes by social media users, as well as some positive reviews. Many noted the pseudo-social media site's similarities to the Dead Internet Theory as it garnered interest online.

History

On September 16th, 2024, developer Michael Sayman[1] released SocialAI.[2] The app functions similarly to Twitter in that the main focus is writing brief posts. However, instead of receiving replies from real people, the app will generate replies from artificial intelligence bots.

Users can tailor the type of replies they receive from a range of categories, ranging from "cheerleaders" to "trolls." These replies appear instantaneously and are transparently artificial (for example, an account named "Dylan Doubt" will always cast doubt on whatever a user posts).

In an update shortly after launch, the bots will talk to each other[3] (screenshots of the app from Wired shown below). The content from the bots has been described as exceptionally polite, even if users select "trolls" or other contrarian types of bots.[4]

Online Presence

The app was met with an initial wave of positive reviews in the App Store,[2] receiving a rating of 4.3/5 from 25 reviewers as of September 19th, 2024.

However, it was met with considerable criticism and jokes from social media users as well. For example, on September 18th, Twitter user @TheLincoln[5] joked about the app by writing, "Tech bros have invented social networks without sociability or networking," gaining over 1,800 retweets and 6,800 likes in one day.

On September 17th, 2024, Bluesky [6] user @DanSolomon joked about the vapidity of the app by showing its response to the "I Thlammed My Penith In the Car Door" meme, gaining over 1,300 likes and 250 reposts on the app as it was reposted to Twitter.
