About
Smug Bookworm Dragon Roommate refers to an illustration of a red dragon reading a book while smoking a pipe. The image macro is often used alongside a caption role-playing as a smug and condescending roommate. The image was originally created by DeviantArt user Robert Crescenzio, and came to be used as a meme on X / Twitter in early 2024, largely popularised by user @powcampsurvivor.
Origin
On January 27th, 2015, DeviantArt[1] user @robertcrescenzio posted a commissioned image titled, "Wyrnn The Bookwyrm," gathering over 10,000 views and 250 favourites in nine years (seen below, left).
The earliest known use of the image as a meme was a post on X[2] by user @powcampsurvivor on October 27th, 2023, that read, "roommate: might be back pretty late tonight we’re gonna go to the club afterwards / me: ah, “the club.” how…simple of you." The post gathered over 2,000 likes in seven months (seen below, right).

On February 11th, 2024, X[5] user @powcampsurvivor posted another smug dragon roommate meme, writing, "my dullard roommate: hey can we use the tv for the big game? me: Ah, “the big game,” enjoy your juvenile pursuit. not to worry, I’ll be in my study." The post gathered over 110,000 likes in two months (seen below, left). On April 15th, @powcampsurvivor[6] posted another Smug Dragon Roommate meme, this time about Tax Day, gathering over 40,000 likes in a week (seen below, right).
On March 23rd, 2024, X[3] user @sabatonfan69 posted a version of the meme that read, "Ah… Dune, you say? Haven’t heard of it. Me? I was just reading a timeless classic. The Alchemist, Paulo Coelho. Have you heard of it? (chucking derisively) of course you haven’t. Now be off with you boy. To play with your Itachis and your Darth Vaders." The post gathered over 4,000 likes in a month (seen below, left)
Also on March 23rd, the original poster[4] quoted another post with a "Speech Bubble Quotes" meme, implying that they sound like the smug Dragon roommate, gathering over 1,000 likes in a month (seen below, right).
