Soup For My Family refers to a quote from Donald Trump while describing protesters during the 2020 Protests against racial injustice and police brutality in which he accused protesters of throwing soup cans at police officers but defend themselves by claiming that the soup is "soup for my family." The clip went viral a month after he said it after Twitter users discovered the rant and found it amusing, leading to parodies and humorous TikTok lipsyncs.

Origin

On July 31st, 2020, President Donald Trump was discussing the protests with the National Association of Police Organizations and went on a tangent about how protestors were using cans of soup as weapons against police (clip shown below).


Spread

The clip didn't begin going viral until a month later, when on September 1st, Twitter user and Washington Post reporter Christopher Ingraham[1] posted about it on Twitter, saying "I somehow missed the President's extended monologue last month on the use of soup as a deadly protest weapon. 'Big bags of soup,'" gaining over 4,600 retweets and 8,800 likes (shown below).

They're doing our country a tremendous disservice – l'll say that.

The tweet led to others discovering the clip and posting jokes about it. User @ditzkoff[2] tweeted a GIF of Andy Warhol throwing soup cans at Homer Simpson from The Simpsons, gaining over 280 retweets and 1,600 likes (shown below, left). User @rob_sheridan[3] posted a can of soup with a Welcome To The Resistance joke, gaining over 640 retweets and 2,300 likes (shown below, right).
