About

Soup For My Family refers to a quote from Donald Trump while describing protesters during the 2020 Protests against racial injustice and police brutality in which he accused protesters of throwing soup cans at police officers but defend themselves by claiming that the soup is "soup for my family." The clip went viral a month after he said it after Twitter users discovered the rant and found it amusing, leading to parodies and humorous TikTok lipsyncs.

Origin

On July 31st, 2020, President Donald Trump was discussing the protests with the National Association of Police Organizations and went on a tangent about how protestors were using cans of soup as weapons against police (clip shown below).

Spread

The clip didn't begin going viral until a month later, when on September 1st, Twitter user and Washington Post reporter Christopher Ingraham[1] posted about it on Twitter, saying "I somehow missed the President's extended monologue last month on the use of soup as a deadly protest weapon. 'Big bags of soup,'" gaining over 4,600 retweets and 8,800 likes (shown below).

Christopher Ingraham I somehow missed the President's extended monologue last month on the use of soup as a deadly protest weapon. "Big bags of soup." whitehouse.gov/briefings-stat... @_cingraham · Sep 1 my family." They're so innocent. “This is soup for my family." It's incredible. And you have people coming over with bags of soup – big bags of soup. And they lay it on the ground, and the anarchists take it and they start throwing it at our cops, at our police. And if it hits you, that's worse than a brick because that's got force. It's the perfect size. It's, like, made perfect. And when they get caught, they say, “No, this is just soup for my family." And then the media says, “This is just soup. These people are very, very innocent. They're innocent people. These are just protesters. Isn't it wonderful to allow protesting?" No, there's – and, by the way, the media knows it better than we do. They know what's going on. I don't know what's wrong with them. They're doing our country a tremendous disservice – l'll say that.

The tweet led to others discovering the clip and posting jokes about it. User @ditzkoff[2] tweeted a GIF of Andy Warhol throwing soup cans at Homer Simpson from The Simpsons, gaining over 280 retweets and 1,600 likes (shown below, left). User @rob_sheridan[3] posted a can of soup with a Welcome To The Resistance joke, gaining over 640 retweets and 2,300 likes (shown below, right).
