Spongebob in Mailbox / Hi Mailman! refers to a scene from Spongebob Squarepants in which Spongebob bursts out of a mailbox and scares Norton the Mailman. A screen capture is used in image macros and as an object labeling series, while the scene itself is used in various video edits.

Origin

On June 1st, 2002, Spongebob Squarepants Season 3 episode 52a, "Chocolate with Nuts" aired on television.[1] The episode begins with Spongebob waiting inside of his mailbox. The mailman opens up the mailbox and Spongebob bursts out and yells, "Hi mailman!" to which the mailman screams (shown below).

On August 22nd, 2009, Grandmaster TJ uploaded the screen capture of Spongebob scaring the mailman with Luigi's head photoshopped over Spongebob's to Flickr,[2] garnering over 8,000 views in 11 years (shown below, left). On November 22nd,
Aelita1234 uploaded a video to YouTube[3] using the audio from the scene over an amateur Miku Hatsune animation, garnering over 56,000 views in a comparable span of time (shown below, right).

On April 26th, 2010, Zelda Phobia uploaded the clip from "Chocolate with Nuts" to YouTube,[4] garnering over 888,000 views in 10 years. Video edits featuring the audio and video clip grew in popularity on YouTube slowly over the next year. For example, on December 10th, 2011, SpartaZeo uploaded a musical remix to the clip garnering over 25,000 views in 9 years (shown below).
