On August 10, 2006, as a parody of the Star Wars Kid, humorist Stephen Colbert performed lightsaber fighting with a toy lightsaber in front of a green screen as part of the "Better Know a District" segment on his satire show "The Colbet Report" on Comedy Central.

Fans later got a hold of the footage and started making their own fan made videos by spicing in LiveMatte footage as well as rotoscoping the toy lightsaber to make it seem real.

Colbert later noticed the fan made videos and featured some of them on his August 21 episode. He then issued the first ever Green Screen Challenge to see who could make the best video using the footage.
