About

Cheap Thrills is a popular DIY arts-and-crafts webseries centered around creating knock-off hypebeast clothing. It is hosted on the Super Deluxe YouTube channel by Nate Contreras, better known by his online pseudonym Tabasko Sweet.

Each video in the series features Nate talking about a popular fashion item, celebrities who've worn it, the average price on the market, followed by a step by step tutorial on how to recreate the item using cheaper materials.

History

The first Cheap Thrills video was posted on April 6, 2017 and was centered around knock off Gucci flip flops(shown below, left). To date the video has over 6 million views, making it the series's most viewed video as well. The video was subsequently posted on /r/streetwear[2] where it received over 300 upvotes. The following week on May 1st the 2nd episode of Cheap Thrills was released centering on the Vetements hoodie. To date the Vetements hoodie episode has over 2.9 million views(shown below, right)

Since then Cheap Thrills has to date produced a total of 36 episodes, each of which has over a million views.

Reputation

The series has become a staple for the Super Deluxe channel, with many episodes reaching views in the millions. Nate has dubbed himself "The Martha Stewart of Hypebeasts", a term which has stuck.[3][4] Tabasko is known for his various catch-phrases he uses throughout each episode("very clean", "fuego alert", "gang-gang", etc.) The series's core demographic is 13-24 year old males. The Daily Dot described Nate as "… a calming, non-judgemental presence so even if you’re not engaging in the tutorial, it can be watched passively, like something more motivational. "[4] Other publications which have covered Cheap Thrills include High Snobiety [5] and Status[6][7].
