History

The Cheddar Bay Biscuits were first released at Red Lobster in 1992.[1] Originally released as "freshly baked, hot cheese garlic bread," a replacement for Red Lobster's hush puppies menu item, the biscuits were renamed "Cheddar Bay Biscuits" in 1996 (commercial below).[2]


Reception

Since 1996, the menu item has remained Red Lobster's most recognizable and arguably their most popular menu item. According to Darden.com,[3] Red Lobster "serves 395 million biscuits every year or almost 1.1 million biscuits every day."

Memes

Beginning in the late-2000s, fans of the Cheddar Bay Biscuits began posting memes that praise the Cheddar Bay Biscuit. Among the earliest is a parody video by the YouTube channel Fun Time Internet entitled "The Curse of Cheddar Bay," which was published on May 21st, 2009. As of July 2019, the post received more than 166,000 views (shown below, left).

The following year, YouTuber Christopher Turner posted a clip from the television series The Boondocks. The post received more than 118,000 views in eight years (shown below, right).


On August 9th, 2019, Instagram [4] user @adam.the.creator posted a Volleyball Booty variation that compares Cheddar Bay Biscuits to bread and garlic bread. The post received more than 28,000 likes in four days (shown below).
