About

Consent Condom is a product created by the ad agency BBDO Argentina and introduced by Argentinian sex toy company Tulipán. The product is a condom which requires four hands to open. Ostensibly, this is to promote consent between sexual participants. However, the product was criticized by social media users as something that sounded better than it would work in practice, pointing out that condom usage does not equal consent in all cases and that it would not prevent sexual assault.

History

On March 27th, 2019, the Twitter account for Argentinian sex toy company Tulipán introduced a condom which requires four hands to open, gaining over 180 retweets and 360 likes (shown below).

The product began drawing commentary from english-speaking countries following a CBS article about the consent condom published April 9th, 2019.[1] CNN covered it the following day.[2]

Online Reactions

After the product was covered by global english publications, Twitter users began to point out numerous issues with the conceit of the condom. Users such as @blaec_francis[3] pointed out that men who did not care about consent in the first place would not care about using a condom, defeating the purpose of the consent condom, gaining over 14,000 retweets and 68,000 likes (shown below, left). Cosmopolitan sex and relationships editor Julia Pugachevsky[5] wrote that the condom was "a dumb attempt to go viral" before pointing out numerous issues with it, gaining 1,000 retweets and 4,900 likes (shown below, right).
