About
I'm Escaping To The One Place That Hasn't Been Corrupted By Capitalism….SPACE!, also known simply as the Tim Curry Space Meme, is a viral quote and cutscene from the 2008 RTS video game Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3, uttered by the character Premier Anatoly Cherdenko, who is played by actor Tim Curry. The scene depicts Curry wearing grey military dress clothes resembling Soviet Union-era garb.
The cutscene started seeing use in memes around the mid-to-late 2010s and has resulted in several fan edits, artwork and animations. Memes using the scene of Curry range from exploitable image macros, recaption edits of the original quote and as a simple reaction image or GIF.
Origin
The cutscene used in the meme originally comes from the real-time strategy game Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3, which was released on PC on October 28th, 2008.
In the final Allied mission, titled "Leningrad – The Moon Shall Never Have Them," Premier Cherdenko (Tim Curry) taunts the player at the start of the mission, stating that the player won't have the satisfaction of capturing him, saying, "I'm escaping to the one place that hasn't been corrupted by capitalism… SPACE!" as he goes to board a space shuttle platform that was hidden in his fortress.
The earliest known upload of the clip from C&C with Curry's quote was posted by YouTube[1] user mathatton on April 20th, 2009, which garnered over 684,000 views, 18,000 likes and 720 comments in roughly 17 years.
