About
Cult of the Lamb is a 2022 roguelite base-building game in which the player is managing a dark cult led by a possessed lamb. Released in August 2022, the game has been a subject of fan art and memes online, as well as receiving largely positive praise from critics and users alike.
History
On August 11th, 2022, the roguelite base-building game Cult of the Lamb, developed by Massive Monster and published by Devolver Digital, was released[1] (announcement trailer shown below, left, launch trailer shown below, right).
Gameplay and Features
In Cult of the Lamb, the player assumes control of a possessed lamb who was saved from death by a godlike entity. To repay the debt, the lamb forms a cult in his name.
Cult of the Lamb combines roguelite and base-building mechanics, with the lamb launching crusades onto five regions to build the cult's following. During the base-building phase, the player manages the cult's grounds and its followers.
Reception
Upon release, the game received positive reviews from critics and audiences. As of August 13th, 2022, on "Metacritic,[2] the game had an 82 aggregated critic rating with 60 reviews. On Steam, the game had a Very Positive (87%) user rating with over 3,400 user reviews.[3]
Fandom
The game maintained an active social media presence with accounts on Twitter[4] and TikTok[5] throughout July and August 2022. The TikTok account posted several videos that went viral on the app. For example, on July 19th, 2022, the TikTok[6] account posted a video that gained over 1.2 million views and 153,100 likes in two weeks (shown below, left). A video[7] posted by the account on July 23rd received over 660,000 views and 120,000 likes in two weeks (shown below, center).

At the time of its release, the game inspired fan art and discussions on social media, with multiple posts going viral. For example, on August 11th, Twitter[8] user @Alleesaurus posted a fan art that received over 5,700 retweets and 33,000 likes in three days (shown below, left). On August 12th, Twitter[9] gimmick account @CanYouPetTheDog made a post about the game that gained over 1,700 retweets and 11,700 likes in two days (screenshot shown below, right).

Cult of the Lamb Sex Update
Cult of the Lamb Sex Update refers to an upcoming update titled "Sins of the Flesh" for the 2022 roguelike base-building game Cult of the Lamb, commonly referred to within the game's community as the "sex update" despite not actually adding sexual content to the game. Shortly following the announcement of the update in late November 2023, the social media account for the game performed a viral stunt, promising to add a "sex update" to the game should the social account account reach over 300,000 followers by the end of the year, and managed to accomplish the feat within three hours instead. The so-called "sex update" inspired an memes, discussions and similar promises from other users and companies on X / Twitter.
