About

Enter the Gungeon is a roguelike bullet-hell video game developed by Dodge Roll and published by Devolver Digital. It was first released for Microsoft and Playstation 4 in 2016 and received Xbox One and Nintendo Switch releases the following year.

History

Development for Enter the Gungeon began in 2014.[1] Developer Dave Crooks and others were influenced by The Binding of Isaac, Nuclear Throne, Spelunky, Dark Souls and Metal Gear Solid. Later that year, Dodge Roll signed a contract with Devolver Digital, and the game was announced in December of 2014 at Playstation Experience.[2] The game was first released on April 5th, 2016 (launch trailer shown below).

An Xbox One port was released a year later on April 5th, 2017, and a port for the Nintendo Switch was released on December 14th, 2017. The game received post-release content in the form of the January 2017 "Supply Drop" update and the July 2018 "Advanced Gungeons and Dragons" update.

Reception

Enter the Gungeon received positive reviews from critics across its available platforms. Versions of the game received Metacritic scores between 82-87/100 points.[2] Critics enjoyed the variety in gameplay and praised its difficulty, while acknowledging it may turn some players off. The game sold over 200,000 copies in its first week. It reached over 1 million sales by July of 2017.

Online Presence

Enter the Gungeon has over 4,300 likes on Facebook[3] and a subreddit with over 32,000 subscribers.[4] Super Best Friends Play played the game on their channel shortly after its release, gaining over 220,000 views (shown below, left). VideoGameDunkey made a video about the game in June of 2018, gaining over 2.3 million views (shown below, right).
