DM ...what I'm saying is there are circumstances where I can tell a player that a Nat 20 misses. Player No Jesse, Nat 20 always hits. Not necessarily, if a PC is unaware that it's under the effect of a mentally subjective illusion spell such as Phantasmal Force, Dream, Phantasmal Killer or Weird I control the narrative of the hallucination... ...if the player attacks and rolls a Nat 20, I have the legitimate option to say they miss for thematic reasons. I prefer to say it misses to cue that this is a non standard combat scenario and the player needs to figure out a different solution for their PC. If the player bemoans this, will say, "OK, you hit... Roll double damage", and apply it to any friendly bystander within range but still tell the player that in their mind the attack still missed. Close your mouth Mr. White, it's unbecoming.
