About

Keep Talking and Nobody Explodes, also known as its abbreviated name KTaNE, is a multiplayer co-operative party game developed by Steel Crate Games. In the game, a player is given the role to defuse a bomb in an allotted amount of time, with other players giving instructions on how to do so without looking at the bomb itself. Released in 2015 for PCs, the game would receive ports to other systems, along with a modding community that allowed the addition of other assets, including larger bombs.

Gameplay

In the game, a player who has the game or is playing the game is the Defuser, who is given the task of defusing a procedurally-generated bomb in an allotted amount of time by successfully completing modules attached to the bomb. The Defuser is given instructions by other players, given the role as Experts, who have access to a manual that describes how to complete the modules but cannot see the bomb themselves. The Defuser must relay back to Experts various visual features of the bomb to aid in completion of modules while Experts relay defusal instructions.

Modules vary in type, with one-time completion modules and "needy" modules that require sporadic attention given to them, and completion instructions, ranging from cutting wires based on certain specifications or text-based modules that require clarity on what is displayed. If the Defuser makes an incorrect move on a module, a strike is given, along with the timer decreasing slightly faster. If enough strikes are gained or time runs out, the bomb explodes.

History

KTaNE was developed by Canadian developers Steel Crate Games, who developed the game with VR in mind without the concession of making the game a singleplayer experience.

Reception

KTaNE received generally positive reviews upon release from users and critics. The game's Steam store page holds a 98% positive rating from over 4,000 user reviews, and while the initial PC version of the game holds a 67/100 score from 5 reviews on Metacritic, other ports of the game have received larger scores,
