About
Luluco Chewing Toast is an exploitable GIF series based on a scene from the anime Space Patrol Luluco, in which the titular protagonist chews on a piece of toast while making a perplexed facial expression. Online, numerous GIF edits of the scene have been created in which Luluco is replaced with characters from other media, including anime, and video games.
History
The scene originated from the first episode[1] of Space Patrol Luluco titled "I'm a Normal Middle School Student," originally aired on April 1st, 2016. In the episode, Luluco's father cries over how normal his daughter is in a strange society of humans and aliens living together, while a disturbed Luluco looks at her father while eating her toast (1:33).
That day, Know Your Meme user Cartoontriper uploaded an animated GIF of Luluco chewing toast (shown below). Within three years, the image gathered upwards of 1,800 views and 35 likes.
Spread
On May 13th, 2017, the GIF was reuploaded to Gfycat.[2] On September 28th, 2017, DeviantArtist[3] Andres2610 posted an edit of the character Dawn from Pokemon: Diamond and Pearl (shown below, left). On September 29th, Know Your Meme user Redmar posted a GIF of the character Lynn from The Loud House (shown below, right).
On March 4th, 2018, DeviantArtist THEDAIBIJIN uploaded a GIF of a green-haired girl eating a building (shown below, left). On February 10th, 2019, Redditor Franku_ uploaded a GIF titled "Mina eating some toast" to /r/ChurchOfMinaAshido[4] (shown below, right)
