About
Overcooked is a 2016 cooking simulation videogame developed by Ghost Town Games and published by Team17. The game was released in August 2016 for PlayStation 4, Windows, and Xbox One, receiving many positive reviews and a stable fandom, that often posts ironic memes about the experience of playing the games with friends.
History
Overcooked was developed by the Cambridge-based company Ghost Town Games[1]. The creators told in an interview for the PC Gamer[2] website on March 25th, 2021, that the kitchen setting of the game was based on Phil Duncan's (game creator) past experience working as a barman and waiter. The game was announced on February 11th, 2016, on Ghost Town Games YouTube[3] (shown below, left), which amassed over 316,000 views and 757 likes in seven years. Overcooked was officially released on August 2nd, 2016, and a launch trailer[4] was revealed a day later (shown below, right) and posted by @Team17Ltd, which amassed more than 282,000 views and 473 likes in seven years.
On June 12th, 2018, at the E3 2018 the sequel Overcooked 2 was revealed in a teaser, which was later posted on YouTube[5] by user @Team17Ltd. The teaser (shown below, left) garnered roughly 269,000 views and 827 likes in five years. A few months later, on August 7th, 2018, the game was released to Linux, macOS, NS, PS4, Windows, Xbox One. A launch trailer (shown below, right) was posted on PlayStation's YouTube[6] channel, amassing over 428,000 views and 3,000 likes.
Online Presence
Online, the cooperative game was highly streamed and shared on social media. For instance, on June 10th, 2019 Buzzfeed posted a video titled "Real Chefs Attempt To Cook Together In Overcooked • Professionals Play," showing two professional chefs trying to play Overcooked. The video[7] (shown below, left) amassed more than 1.6 million views and 44,000 likes in four years. Brazilian streamer Alanzoka shared a Overcooked 2 gameplay with friends on January 11th, 2021. The post[8] (shown below, right) garnered over 1.5 million views and 74,000 likes in two years.
The fast-paced and chaotic gameplay demands cooperation and alignment in the team playing Overcooked_, which can, sometimes, lead to arguments and fights among friends during the game. On June 24th, 2023, TIkTok[9] user @video._.funny posted a video showing how people can play the game in different ways (shown below, left), which amassed more than 3 million plays and 418,000 likes in four months. On June 13th, 2023, user @academiadosgamers[10] posted a video describing the stages of playing the game with friends, which garnered over 3 million plays and 637,000 likes in four months.
