About

Peepy is a series of plush toys from plush maker itemLabel. The plush and its advertisement songs became a popular source of fan videos and animations on YouTube beginning in 2021. The advertisements for the product are surreal and bizarre, drawing fascination from other YouTubers throughout its time online.

History

The Peepy plush first launched on the website itemLabel in October of 2020.[1] The plush has a beak, beady eyes, cat ears, and is described as a "super criminal". Two music videos featuring the plush were posted to YouTube by itemLabel in January of 2021. The first video, titled "PPPP PaPiPuPePo", was posted on January 4th, 2021, and features several variants of the plush (shown below, left). The video received over 959,000 views in over three years. On January 20th, 2021, another Peepy video, which is titled "Peepy's Theme" features the main variant of the plush "Cowpy" which has a cow fabric pattern (shown below, right). The video received over 7.6 million views in over three years.

Over the following several years, multiple more Peepys were introduced with increasingly surreal animations. These are often scored by Tokyo musician emamouse.[2] Other popular videos include "Peepy's Secret," posted September 26th, 2021, which gained over 628,000 views in three years (shown below, left), and "Color Me Peepy," posted August 11th, 2023, gaining over 200,000 views in nearly one year (shown below, right).

Descriptions for various plushies are surreal and reference the plush's checkered pasts. For example, the description for "LEMON PEEPY"[3] reads, "After committing a dangerous and disrespectful crime, Peepy is out on bail and ready to come to your house."

Online Presence

The product spawned a small fandom online. Peepy has a Wiki[1] page and has been covered in Digg.[4] The brand's subreddit[5] has over 3,400 members as of June 17th, 2024.

On March 26th, 2021, YouTuber Fascher posted an anime parody of Peepy, gaining over 12,000 views in three years (shown below, left). On August 26th, 2023, YouTuber Dylan Wright posted a video about Peepy that gained over 11,000 views in nine months (shown below, left).
