About

RTL and RTL II are germany's private-broadcasting channels owned by Radio Television Luxembourg Group. They are most notable for their "trash programming" (actually "Assi TV", english: "Anti-social Television") airing on afternoon but not only these channels. On the internet, it will always be mockered, parodied and discussed.

Origin

RTL began airing on January 2, 1984 and RTL II on March 6, 1993.

Pseudo-documentary / Scripted reality

However, pseudo-documentaries or scripted reality didn't start airing on germany until ProSieben aired the first scripted reality show called "Nicole – Entscheidung am Nachmittag" started on March 4, 1999 and ended in 2001. In contrast of today's scripted reality shows, it received good reviews. ProSieben aired other two scripted reality shows.

Then in 2003, RTL II started to air the most popular scripted reality show called Frauentausch, the german version of Wife Swap. This is the first german show, that received bad reviews. It always shows two different families, which one has a good manner of family and the other one the opposite.

Mockery

The most popular phrases mockering RTL is Das N in RTL steht für Niveau (in english understandable version: The I in RTL stands for Intelligence) and weRTLos (english: worthless).

As(s)i-TV

Asi-TV, often wroten as Assi-TV, is the term referring to program, that is anti-social. It often describes TV series containing sexuality, laziness and gaming.
