About

The Muppet Christmas Carol is a 1992 adaptation of Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol starring Michael Caine as Ebenezer Scrooge and various Muppets filling out various other roles, such as Gonzo as Charles Dickens, Kermit the Frog as Bob Cratchit, Fozzie Bear as "Fozziewig," etc. The film is widely thought of as a Christmas classic, and is routinely fondly recalled in memes and posts during the holiday season.

History

The Muppet Christmas Carol was directed by Brian Henson and released on December 11th, 1992[1] (trailer shown below). The film stars Michael Caine as Ebenezer Scrooge and features Muppets making up the majority of the rest of the cast (the exceptions being Nephew Fred and Belle). The film, a musical, received middling critical reviews upon its 1992 release but has become a beloved holiday classic in the decades since. For example, in 2018, Screenrant[2] named it the Best Christmas Movie of All Time.

Of note, the song "When Love Is Gone," sung by Belle to Young Scrooge at the conclusion of the "Ghost of Christmas Past" portion of the film, has proven divisive among fans of the film.[3] The song was cut from the theatrical release of the film to the dismay of Brian Henson, who argued that the song was necessary for the film's final song, a reprise named "When Love Is Found," to make sense. The song was included on home releases of the film but cut in the 2012 Blu-ray release. On September 10th, 2022, it was announced that the song would be included in the film's release on Disney+.

Online Presence

As the film grew more widely beloved by Millennials in the decades since its release, it became the subject of wholesome discussion and memes on social media. On November 29th, 2021, YouTuber In/Frame/Out posted a video calling the film "perfection," gaining over 145,000 views in one year (shown below, left). On December 24th, 2019, CinemaSins posted a tongue-in-cheek review of the film's "sins," but praised it as "one of the best Christmas movies ever made."

Additionally, the film is regularly praised on Twitter, where users regularly call it one of the greatest Christmas songs ever made. For example, on December 21st, 2022, Twitter user Gibbonanxious[3] tweeted that the film was, "without doubt, the best cinematic adaptation of Charles Dicken's classic novel. Michael Caine is the greatest ever Ebenezer Scrooge and it's also the finest ever movie outing for The Muppets" (shown below, left). User @RaxKingIsDead[4] joked about the film's opening number, writing, "i love the opening song in muppet christmas carol where all the muppets are like 🎶there he goes, the mutherfucker of the earth, history's cheapest piece of shit🎶 while michael caine acts harder than anyone has ever acted before," gaining over 230 retweets and 1,600 likes (shown below, right).

It's about damn time, this movie is a masterpiece. Cutting out 'When Love is Gone' was a crime against cinema and was proof that Jeffrey Katzenberg often had no idea what he was doing…then again him calling Pauley Shore the funniest man to ever live and giving him a three movie deal was proof enough of that.
