The Ted Bundy Tapes is an American documentary television series, directed by Joe Berlinger, that premiered on Netflix on January 24, 2019. The 4-part series includes interviews and archival footage of serial killer Ted Bundy and those affected by his actions.

History

Theodore Robert Bundy was an American serial killer, kidnapper, rapist, burglar, and necrophile who assaulted and murdered numerous young women and girls during the 1970s and possibly earlier.^[3] "The Ted Bundy Tapes" was released on the 30th anniversary of his execution.

On January 25th, 2019, Netflix^[2] tweeted "Don't watch 'Conversations with a Killer: The Ted Bundy Tapes' alone. Trust me on this one." The tweet accumulated 1,226 retweets and 11,045 likes (shown below).

That day many Twitter users, including Rebecca Coley^[7] (shown below, left) and KaleCartel ^[8](shown below, right) replied.

Reception

On January 24th, Twitter user @brenduhbae^[9] reacted in fear like many other users (shown below). Their tweet garnered 540 retweets and 2,949 likes in a week.

Others took to twitter to express how hot they think Ted Bundy is (shown below).^[4][5][6]

On January 28th, Netflix^[2] responded on Twitter saying "I've seen a lot of talk about Ted Bundy’s alleged hotness and would like to gently remind everyone that there are literally THOUSANDS of hot men on the service -- almost all of whom are not convicted serial murderers." The tweet gained 28,151 retweets and 143,404 likes in four days (shown below).

On January 30th, Adam Epstein of Quartzy^[1] wrote that "Netflix marketing executives know that these kinds of memes, whether they’re mostly innocuous or unfortunately glorifying a man convicted of unspeakable crimes, are good for business. They increase interest, drive up viewers, and, ultimately, boost subscriptions."
