The Thief and the Cobbler (also know as The Princess and the Cobbler and Arabian Knight) is an animated film directed by Richard Williams (the animation director of Who Framed Roger Rabbit). It was in production from 1964 to 1992. It was brought my The Completion Bond Company and given to Fred Calvert, and, later, Miramax, because Williams was taking too long.
Versions
There are several different versions of The Thief and they all (Except the Spanish version) can be found on TheThiefArchive's YouTube channel.
Richard Williams' Original Workprint
This is a workprint that Williams put together before it was taken from him.
Fred Calvert's Workprint
This is a workprint that Calvert put together after It was taken from Williams.
Fred Calvert's Version
This version is protected by the Berne Act.
The Miramax Version
The Miramax version is, by far the most notorious version, It stars Matthew Broderick as Tack, the Cobbler and Jonathan Winters as the Thief.
The Recobbled Cut
The Recobbled Cut is a restoration of Williams' original workprint made by Garrett Gilchrist, It adds all the original voices (Sean Connery doing Tack's only line, and King Nod voiced by Anthony Quayle), and removes a lot of the Miramax/Calvert edits. Except a couple. The Old Witch first appears as an eye, Zig-Zag and Tack still fight, and a shot of the Thief being praised for returning the golden balls, for example.
Spanish Version
Recently, a Spanish version, entitled El Zapatero y La Princesa, was found. English voices from the Miramax version where added in by YouTube user Josh366lol. It mostly Resembles the Calvert version.
Nostalgia Critic Review
The Nostalgia Critic made a review of the Miramax version, where he told a brief summery of the film's history, and he recommended the Recobbled Cut at the end.
