About

Suicide Booth refers to a series of three-panel exploitable images featuring scenes of the animated television series Futurama. In the first panel, the character Fry from the show waits to use a "suicide booth". Panel two shows an image that the meme's author finds objectionable. The third panel shows Fry pushing the "start" button on the booth, sarcastically indicating that the second image makes the author contemplate suicide.

Origin

The images of Fry at the suicide booth come from the first episode of Futurama, which aired on March 28th, 1999.[1] In the episode, Fry becomes trapped in a cryogenic chamber and sleeps for 1,000 years. When he awakes, he tries to commit suicide by entering the "suicide booth," a machine designed to assist with suicide (clip below).


In June 2016, iFunny [2] user Falls began posting a series of exploitables using frames from the scene. Their original posts (shown below) features a four-panel version of the meme.

The following year, on August 3rd, 9GAG [5] user sum dum hoe posted a three-panel version of the meme. The post (shown below) features a Facebook post by a woman who misunderstands time zones, receiving more than 4,900 points and 70 comments.

On August 30th, Redditor [3] AJG1025 posted the meme on the /r/MemeEconomy subreddit. The post featured a variation of the meme with an editorial article entitled "Is Lego Sexist." The post (shown below, left) received more than 500 points (94% upvoted) an 30 comments. Less than two weeks later, Redditor[4] DireRavenGG, featuring a picture of a woman holding a pennant received more than 200 points (96% upvoted).
