About

The American Meme is a documentary film purchased by Netflix about the personal lives of popular social media stars including Paris Hilton, Emily Ratajkowski, The Fat Jew, and others.

History

The film is directed by Bert Marcus and stars social media influencers Paris Hilton, Josh Ostrovsky, Kirill Bichutsky, Brittany Furlan, Hailey Baldwin, DJ Khaled, Emily Ratajkowski and Dane Cook.[1]

The film debuted at Tribeca Film Festival on April 27th, 2018, where it was then purchased by Netflix.[2][3] It then premiered on Netflix on December 7th, 2018.

Reception

The film was well-received critically, netting a score of 95/100 on Rotten Tomatoes and an audience score of 99.[4] In addition to praise given to Marcus' treatment of his subjects, critics were also were impressed with Paris Hilton's dissection of herself as a social media star. Decider wrote, "In a series of quiet, reflective interviews, Hilton explains why she trusts her fans more than her friends and dissects the risqué David LaChappelle photoshoot that transformed her into a household name." The Fat Jew was also praised for coming off as likable despite becoming a pariah in social media circles. Polygon wrote, "Josh Ostrovsky -- known as “The Fat Jewish” -- is perhaps the most self-aware, and near the end of the documentary he states that he knows all this is going to end sooner or later."
