Overview

TheBurntPeanut Dead By Daylight Controversy refers to backlash that the streamer TheBurntPeanut and the developers of the video game Dead by Daylight, (DbD) Behaviour Interactive, received after a Behaviour Interactive team member gifted TheBurntPeanut all of the DLC for the video game for free.

The controversy stems from allegations that TheBurntPeanut is racist and homophobic, which purportedly clashes with the values of the Dead by Daylight team and community. The gifting was also seen as an example of "streamer privilege." The Dead by Daylight team released two responses to the drama, apologizing to the community for gifting TheBurntPeanut the DLC, and revoking the content from his account.

Background

On October 30th, 2026, streamer TheBurntPeanut hosted a Twitch[1] stream where he played the multiplayer survival horror video game Dead by Daylight. During the stream, a member of the Dead by Daylight team gifted TheBurntPeanut all of the characters in the game for free.

After receiving all the characters, TheBurntPeanut jokes about how X users will react, mockingly saying, "Streamer privilege, streamer privilege!" He also makes fun of people in his chat that are getting mad about it. Purportedly, the team member who gifted TheBurntPeanut the skins wrote in the chat, "WE CAN TAKE THE HEAT! THEY ARE YOURS TO KEEP."[2]

Backlash

The gifting resulted in backlash primarily towards the Dead by Daylight team, especially on X.

On October 31st, 2026, X[3] user @Awk20000 posted a video sharing a now-private post from user @BeardedCollectr complaining about TheBurntPeanut receiving the gifts on the grounds of the streamer being a "massive racist and homophobe," garnering over 5,500 likes in three days.

Developments

Dead by Daylight's First Response

On October 31st, 2026, the @DbDPulse X[4] page, an official page which gives updates from the DbD team, made a explaining the situation and apologizing for gifting TheBurntPeanut the DLC, gaining over 15,000 likes in three days. In the post, they assure the community that they're looking into the situation and reviewing their internal processes to "prevent an incident like this from happening again."

DbD Pulse @DbDPulse This weekend, a Dead by Daylight team member awarded in-game content and currency to a creator streaming our game. Although it is not unusual to unlock content to give creators discovering DbD a chance to have a sneak peek at available content, this decision was made without receiving appropriate approvals. Furthermore, the team member's subsequent comments and conduct do not align with Dead by Daylight's core values. When concerns about this decision became apparent during the stream, we should have responded by looking into these concerns, not dismissing them. Unfortunately, we've now seen the fallout of this decision unfolding in many conversations across the DbD community. We appreciate and stand with our community's willingness to ensure our shared values are being upheld, at all times, regardless of popularity, and we're heartbroken at the inflammatory language now being directed towards our community. At the same time, threatening employees will never be acceptable, and we're asking everyone to stop engaging with these posts. We apologize to our community for letting you down. We have already begun reviewing our internal processes to prevent an incident like this from happening again. 2:35 PM - Nov 1, 2026 -6.1M Views

TheBurntPeanut's Response

On November 2nd, 2026, TheBurntPeanut addressed the backlash during a stream on Twitch.[5] In his response, which was clipped and reposted by X[6] user @awk20000 that day, he makes fun of those trying to cancel him and insists he does not support racism or transphobia.

Dead by Daylight's Second Response

On November 2nd, 2026, the DbD team posted another, longer response to the controversy on X,[7] garnering over 24,000 likes in a day. In the statement, they again apologize, lay out how they're going to internally make sure an incident like this does not happen again, and make it known that they took the DLC away from TheBurntPeanut's account.

First: We've seen many of you ask why this happened, and why this creator? The reason this happened is initially very straightforward. Members of our team saw a very large audience appear in the DbD Twitch directory watching a streamer who has not played DbD before. Moments like this are usually exciting for the dev team, as they are a chance to welcome new players. But we moved too fast and there were problems with how this played out. Due Diligence - The decision was made to give that creator in-game content and directly participate in their chat, before taking the necessary time to look at if this was a good idea. This happened quickly and outside of our usual team discussions. When collaborating with a new creator, we normally look thoroughly at their past content to determine whether they are representing the values of inclusion our community expects from us. In this case, this was not taken into proper consideration or discussed as a group. Internal Processes - We did not have stringent enough processes and guardrails internally to prevent from directly granting in-game items to players without larger consensus and approval. Our team member acted without a supporting system behind them to guide them to another outcome. (CONT'D) First: We've seen many of you ask why this happened, and why this creator? Communication Standards In the stream chat, when the creator offered to give back the in-game content, seemingly self-aware of the blowback to come and using pejorative words for people on Twitter, the reply from our official account by the team member was "WE CAN TAKE THE HEAT!" This message, along with some others in that session, showed a disregard for the context we were suddenly in and crossed the line of appropriate responses from our brand. That reply escalated the situation for us and for our community, especially our content creators on the frontlines of these conversations, and that's unacceptable. Second: You talk about your values but we don't have a shared understanding of what they are. What are they? - When we talk about our values in relation to our community, we mean respect, transparency, diversity, and creating a space where people from different backgrounds and experiences feel welcome. Diversity is one of DbD's core principles and everyone is welcome to play it. But when we choose to work with a creator, we're putting our name next to theirs, and we want to partner with creators whose words and actions share and support that principle. Third: What are we doing about it? Each one of the problems listed above present addressable solutions we are already moving forward with. Removing the Content - We have already removed the content that was granted to the creator. Due Diligence We are rewriting our guidelines for how we interact with creators playing Dead by Daylight including who on our team can make those calls. These guidelines will focus on identifying creators whose past conduct has been in direct opposition to the inclusive community we are trying to build. Internal Process We are updating our request and approval methods for granting content and currency to players. While ensuring this updated process involves the proper checks and balances at the right time, it also must take our values into account. We will also be training our team on these new processes and methods to ensure everyone is on the same page. Communication Standards - Any interactions done with creators of any size need to adhere to communication standards that ensure any Dead by Daylight spokesperson is properly representing our team and our values. (CONT'D) Third: What are we doing about it? Creator Program For the Creator Program, creators who are found to have violated the Creator Program policy will result in removal. Any actions taken that put a creator on hold or remove them from the program will be directly communicated to the creator(s) involved. There will be no additional communications on our social channels or in program Discords about these actions. All removals are at the discretion of the team. Fourth: What actions are going to be taken for team members involved in the decision making that led us here? - We take this situation very seriously and are taking appropriate action internally. As this is a confidential matter, we won't be sharing further details. This incident has broken trust with our community who hold expectations and regards for the types of people we partner with, but more importantly expectations of the conduct and actions taken by our team in our daily work within this community. We understand it will be a slow road to regain that trust but we are committed to doing the work necessary to get there.

Responses To Dead by Daylight's Second Response

The DbD team's second response and apology to the incident, made on November 2nd, 2026, inspired mixed reactions online.

Pathetic capitulation that will earn the respect of no one," garnering over 47,000 likes in a day and ratio-ing the post.

Around the same time, streamer and X[10] user Tectone commented, "A community of f---ots really is this fragile huh," garnering over 11,000 likes in a day.
