SUMMARY
Then the Winged Hussars arrived is a viral meme primarily on YouTube that perhaps takes a nod from the Rick Roll meme of old.
The meme has content prividors taking a sad or slow song (most of the time) and then the lyrics from the song "Winged Hussars" by the power metal group Sabaton with occasionally more lyrics following by with "coming down the mountainside" and during the lyrics being accompanied by a clip from either a film featuring the Hussars, action figures of them just floating across the screen (the second being more comedic), or finally just simply nothing. Another variant of this is by simply plastering "Then the Winged Hussars arrived" (either in caps or as presented) in comments of often sad or slow songs on YouTube.
It is unknown if the band recognizes the meme's existence for no known comment by the Sabaton's YouTube account or by "Nuclear Blast" the Record company that often releases Sabaton songs
ORIGIN
The origin of "When the Winged Hussars arrived" is from the teaser release of the Sabaton album "The Last Stand" with the earliest known teaser release known being from YouTube user "We Are Sabaton" on July 3, 2016 (on YouTube). The sample quickly spread to other users. The meme first surfaced when Reddit User "Meshakhad" requested on "r/sabaton" become a meme and as quoted said
"Someone on YouTube actually had a fun idea: adding "AND THEN THE WINGED HUSSARS ARRIVED!" to sad or slow songs. I challenge audio editors to do this. For example:
Ever since it started on Kristallnacht '38
When liberty died, and truth was denied
Sent away on trains on a one-way trip to hell
Enter the gates, Auschwitz awaits!
THEN THE WINGED HUSSARS ARRIVED!"
Reddit User "ProjectSeventy" is one of the first known users to perform this and began the chain when other Redditers did the same and eventually the YouTube community proper.
POSSIBLE REFERENCES IN MEDIA
In the Civilisation 6 launch trailer, the meme is showcased (potentially). As the narrative and music become melancholy, cavalry wearing winged armour (winged hussars) appear and charged into a battle. However this is up to speculation
