These KYM staffs screwed up big time. First they shoehorning and shoving up political controversy BS that is barely a meme to our feed, to messed up their new UI for to sucked Google AdSense's d--- for the money.

Wanted to give y'all a heads up that, unfortunately, the legacy or "old" site will be shutting down in the near future as KYM fully switches over to the new site. We know the redesign hasn't been entirely popular with many of you, but it's being done to help remedy a lot of issues the old layout had that are causing problems with the site's health in the eyes of Google, which we have to do in order to keep KYM alive and well. Originally, we intended to keep the old site available for people to use, but we've now noticed that it's causing KYM even more issues with Google while we have both it and the new site live, which is essentially duplicating everything in the database and causing problems. Though the old site will be sunset, the staff and devs have been listening to feedback over the last several months and will continue to do so as we keep fixing bugs and getting the redesign to a place that both the users and admins (and Google) are happy with. During the switch to the redesign, we want to continue encouraging everyone to report issues you come across so we can send them to the devs to address, so please keep voicing bugs or suggestions as you use the new site. KnowYourMeme Sunset refers to the discontinuation and sunsetting of KnowYourMeme's old UI, intending to push users to using the new user interface (UI). This action, seen as forcing a partially-finished product on the site's users, has been very controversial and has caused many users to leave the site in protest.

History

Around April of 2024, a UI update was pushed to KnowYourMeme with little to no advance notice. This UI was very unpopular with the userbase, with both the new and old layouts having a large amount of bugs. A large amount of users still preferred to use the old layout via use of the "Old Site" button, and users posted original content to the site's gallery to complain about the new layout.

Origin

On May 12, 2025 KnowYourMeme staff member Zach posted a thread^[1] to the KnowYourMeme forums that the old site layout was going to be fully shut down to completely focus on the new UI and to be favoured more by Google Search. This sparked a heavy backlash from the userbase, with Zach's post having 133 downvotes as of August 18, 2025 and making a large number of site users deactivate or delete their accounts in protest.

Zach's thread began to be filled with complaints about the new website, with many users saying they were going to deactivate or delete their accounts in protest.
On May 21, 2025, user RamdomGuy2013 posted an image called "Sunset" (shown below), being a collage of prominent users on an island watching the sun set over the website, which as of August 19, 2025 has 103 likes, over 6,400 views and 157 comments.^[2]
RamdomGuy3013 also posted a thread titled "KnowYourMeme Sunset", complaining of the sunsetting of the old UI and as of August 19, 2025 has over 7,500 views. ^[3]
These all garnered attention from the KnowYourMeme community, with a number of veteran and legacy users seeing this as the last straw to them, sharing their favourite memories from the website and deactivating or deleting their accounts in protest.
Many users saw this matching the pattern of enshittification, with a new, advertiser-friendly layout being forced on users despite having unpatched bugs.

This website's community was the best one I've ever been a part of. Even as a silent lurker.

I'm sorry for any missing users that you think should have been included in this image. I didn't have the image file or time for all of them. Or because they simply slipped my mind cause there were a lot of users to remember and I did this image on a "screw it, just wing it and work on memory" aproach since I didn't know how much time I and this classic layout had left.

Just know, that if I had the infinite time, brain power and image space, I would add most of the active and memorable KYM users into this image.

So if you aren't in this image, don't feel bad, cause I would add you do it if things were different. There simply wasn't space and time for all. Just know you're in this image in spirit.

And with the coming sunset of this era of Know Your Meme, I just want to say to those that know me, to those that don't me, to those that are still here in this website and are planning to stay, and to those that have already deactivated themselfs with no intentions to ever coming back.
