They Hate to See a Girlboss Winning is an internet catchphrase ironically decrying society's displeasure towards an assertive woman's success.
Origin
On December 23rd, 2020, Twitter [1] user @obviousm0mmy posted the earliest available usage of the phrase, tweeting, "me, pushing a giant boulder up a hill forever: they HATE to see a girlboss winning" (shown below).
Spread
Over the next week, usage of the phrase saw some usage on Twitter (example below, left). However, these instances did not receive much engagement.
On January 8th, 2021, Tumblr [2] user death2america posted, "your honor, they simply hate to see a girlboss winning." The post was the first major point of spread for the phrase, receiving more than 20,000 notes in less than four months (shown below, center).
After the post went viral, more users began using the phrase. On February 24th, Tumblr[3] user letmebegaytodd posted, "deacon, sprinting away from a group of pissed off raiders: THEY HATE TO SEE A GIRL BOSS WINNING." The post received more than 400 notes in less than one month (shown below).
