The VMAs ending
Rap singer Kanye West was chosen to close the VMAs that aired live on Sunday the 12th of September 2010.
Singing Runaway, an unreleased song of him, he began his intro with the following words :
Let's have a toast for the assholes
Let's have a toast for the scum bags;
Every one of them that I know,
Let's have a toast to the jerk offs
That'll never take work off.
Baby I gotta a plan;
Run away as fast as you can
Reminiscence of the 2009 VMAs
Following the end of the VMAs, many articles started saluting West's impression in it as a success.
According to The boom box and MusicMix.ew, Kany West was frantically writing apologies on his twitter account because of what happened on last year's VMAs up to his time on stage.
They also account for Taylor Swift's performance whose song was targeted at him.
As a matter of fact, Kanye's performance was seen as a twist, both self-depreciating on his part but also as a way to gather attention on him.
Twitter frenzy : Let's have a toast
Immediately after the VMAs closed, tons of tweets featuring the now famous lyrics began appearing on twitter.
As the following Trend map link shows, "a toast for the scumbags" became quite quickly a hot topic throughout the world.
While many tweets are mostly referring to the VMAs and the song themselves :
Other were focusing as, following the lyrics, having a toast for every douchebag, scumbag or jerk-off :
