About

Torpedobeat is a sub-genre of montage parody videos using footage from the MMO shooter game World of Warships. The videos typically feature clips of warships taking evasive maneuvers to dodge torpedo salvos accompanied by Eurobeat music playing in the background.

Origin

On September 17th, 2015, the Belarussian game developer and publisher Wargaming.net released World of Warships, in which players control various warships deployed in World War I and World War II, using similar gameplay mechanics to Wargaming's previous titled World of Tanks.[3] In the game, torpedoes are consider powerful weapons, which can deal a lot of damage per shot to any class of ship and are extremely difficult to dodge.

On March 4th, 2016, YouTuber Yuro (formerly known as atsf) began posting a series of World of Warships themed montage parodies featuring clips of him steering his ship to dodge torpedo salvos, remixed with video footage of the anime Initial D and various other Eurobeat tracks playing in the background. (shown below)

Spread

On March 20th, 2016, Yuro posted a Unicum guide video explaining how to play the American cruiser USS Atlanta in the game. The video featured similar torpedo dodging footage, set to the music "Night of Fire" by Niko (shown below).

On May 14th, 2016, World of Warships user Iroks posted on the game's official forum a thread etitled "Torpedobeat is real", with a (now deleted) link to a mod replacing the in-game "torpedo incoming" alarm siren by a random Eurobeat song.[6][7] On May 23rd, a definition for "Torpedobeats" was added to the Urban dicitonnary and gained 34 positive reviews. Later on, several other Youtube users and World of Warships players started posting their own torpedobeat montages.

On September 7th, 2016, the official World of Warships Facebook page posted a GIF of a destroyer dodging torpedoes with the caption "Torpedobeat intensifies !"[11] On December 13th, 2016, Redditor MetroDudeGuy[12] announced the creation of the dedicated /r/torpedobeat subreddit,[13] where users are invited to post their creations, either in video or GIFs with sound form. As of July 2017, the keyword "Torpedobeat" yields 3290 search results on YouTube and 88 on the World of Warships subreddit..
